Chapter 4: The Bridge of Truth

Chapter 4: The Bridge of Truth

The bridge was a skeleton of rusted iron stretching over the dark, swirling river. When Mrs. Hernández arrived, she saw Carlos’s car parked at an awkward angle, the driver’s door wide open.

"Carlos!" she screamed, her voice cracking.

She ran to the edge of the railing. There he was. Carlos stood at the very brink, his shoulders hunched, staring into the abyss. He looked like a child lost in a storm.

"Carlos, stay back!"

He turned, his eyes hollow. "Mother? Why are you here? You know, don't you? You know who I married. You know the sin we committed."

"It is not a sin!" she cried, stepping closer, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Lucía lied to you, Carlos. She lied to keep us apart, to break your father."

"She showed me the papers!" he shouted, his voice echoing over the water. "The birth certificate, the photos—"

"Papers can be forged. Lies can be printed," she countered, pulling the note from her pocket. "She told me, 'Mariana is not his sister.' If she’s not your sister, then who is she?"

Carlos froze. "What?"

"She isn't his daughter, Carlos," a voice drifted from the shadows.

Lucía stepped onto the bridge. She looked older than Mrs. Hernández remembered, her face hardened by years of bitterness. She held a small, black pistol, her hand steady.

"She isn't Ernesto's daughter," Lucía confirmed, her eyes fixated on Mrs. Hernández. "Ernesto was a coward, yes. He abandoned me. But when I found out I was pregnant, I didn't marry him—I married a man who was already dying. Mariana is the daughter of a man who owned everything this family now holds. A man Ernesto ruined twenty-five years ago."

Mrs. Hernández stood between her son and the woman who had orchestrated the nightmare. "You didn't want justice. You wanted to destroy us because you couldn't have him."

"I wanted to see him suffer," Lucía whispered. "I wanted him to watch his perfect son marry the girl he thought was his own blood, only to be crushed by the truth. But then, I realized the truth was even better. Mariana isn't just a stranger. She’s the legal heir to everything the Hernández estate sits on."
