Chapter 2 - The Midnight Ledger

The vibration of Brooke Harrington’s phone against the marble vanity sounded like a trapped wasp. She picked it up instantly, her manicured thumb swiping across the encrypted messenger.

The two-word text from her older brother, Julian Harrington, stared back at her: He suspects.

Brooke felt a cold drop in her stomach, but she forced her breathing to remain slow and measured. Julian was always paranoid, a nervous gambler constantly looking over his shoulder while running the Harrington family’s failing logistics firm into the ground. Dominic Mercer was supposed to be halfway across the Atlantic, dining with shipping magnates in Mayfair and negotiating territorial boundaries for his port empire. He had no reason to suspect anything.

Or did he?

Brooke slipped out of her bedroom suite and moved through the quiet west wing of the Newport mansion. It was barely 5:30 in the morning. Rain lashed against the towering leaded-glass windows, blurring the gray Atlantic horizon. The Mercer estate was vast—forty thousand square feet of limestone, imported Italian oak, and dark secrets built by three generations of ruthless men. Dominic had taken his father’s underworld legacy and polished it into a multibillion-dollar syndicate disguised as legitimate global freight and luxury real estate.

She walked down the spiral service stairs toward the basement archives, her slippers making no sound on the runner rugs.

Brooke needed the second half of Catherine Mercer’s trust portfolio before eight o'clock. The crooked probate attorney she had bribed, Arthur Vance, was arriving under the guise of finalizing pre-nuptial logistics. If Natalie Mercer signed the waiver, Vance could file the amended deed before Dominic’s flight touched down on Monday. By the time Dominic realized the east cottage and its surrounding seventy acres of prime shoreline had been carved out of the family trust, the deed would be under Harrington Holdings, pledged as collateral for Julian’s debts.

Brooke unlocked the heavy brass door to the lower library.

She moved straight to the grandfather clock in the corner, sliding the bezel back to reveal the small biometric safe Catherine had installed before she passed away. Brooke retrieved the forged power of attorney from her pocket and opened the ledger inside.

What Brooke didn’t know was that fifty feet above her, in the darkened control alcove behind the master study, Dominic Mercer was standing motionless in front of a bank of nine high-definition security monitors.

His wet overcoat hung over the back of a leather armchair. In his hand, he held a glass of untouched bourbon. Standing beside him was Silas Reed, Dominic’s head of private security and a man whose loyalty had been bought with blood fifteen years earlier.

"She used Catherine's private master key code," Silas murmured, his voice like gravel. "Vance bypassed the secondary biometric scan using a legacy override last Tuesday."

Dominic watched the screen. His gray eyes were flat, devoid of the warmth he had shown Brooke over the six months of their courtship.

"She thinks she's dealing with a businessman who fell in love," Dominic said quietly. "She forgot that before I was a CEO, I buried five men who thought they could rob my family."

"Do you want me to pull her up here now, Boss?" Silas asked, his hand drifting toward his sidearm.

"No," Dominic replied, turning away from the monitors. "A quick confession gives her an easy way out. She'll weep, claim Julian forced her hand, and beg for mercy on account of the wedding. I want every roach out of the woodwork. I want Julian, Vance, and whichever syndicate they pledged my mother's land to."

Dominic looked toward the small intercom speaker on the desk. "Emma."

A soft chime sounded, followed by the maid’s quiet voice. "Yes, Mr. Mercer?"

"Keep Natalie and Noah upstairs until seven. Act normal. Let Brooke think she has the upper hand."

"And if she tries to threaten them again?" Emma asked.

Dominic’s jaw set like iron. "Tell her Natalie is considering signing. Give her enough rope to hang her entire bloodline."

Downstairs, Brooke snapped the ledger shut, a triumphant smile curving her lips as she pocketed the transfer deeds. She checked her watch. In two hours, she would become untouchable.
