Chapter 3 : The Echoes in the Leather

The investigation took a sinister turn when the forensics team analyzed the "boots." They weren't just leather; the lining was reinforced with lead wiring, a crude attempt to suppress bone growth and prevent the child from walking correctly. It was a torture method designed to keep the victim immobile and dependent.

Miller sat in the precinct, staring at a map of the state. He marked every location where one of the "missing" girls had been last seen. They formed a perfect circle, with the grandmother’s home at the epicenter.

"She wasn't raising them," Miller said to his partner. "She was harvesting them."

"Harvesting what?" his partner asked, looking disgusted.

"Compliance," Miller replied. "She was creating 'perfect' children—broken, injured, and entirely reliant on her. And then, when they got too old or too damaged to play the part, she 'sent them to the farm'."

That night, Rachel Bennett went back to the hospital. Ava was awake, sitting up in bed, looking at the bandages on her feet.

"Rachel?" Ava asked.

"Yes, honey?"

"If I walk," Ava whispered, her voice trembling, "will they come back for me?"

Rachel felt a surge of protective rage. "Nobody is coming for you. You are safe. I promise."

"But they're in the walls," Ava said, her eyes suddenly wide and frantic. "Grandma said if I was good, the girls in the walls would stay quiet. But they're not quiet anymore. They're whispering."

Rachel looked at the hospital room walls, then at Ava. The child was hallucinating, or perhaps, she was remembering something buried deep in her psyche. Rachel grabbed her notebook. "What are they saying, Ava?"

Ava leaned in close, her voice a fragile rasp. "They're saying the farm isn't a place. It's the floor. Under the house."
