Chapter 3: The Architecture of Deception

The fury that surged through Alejandro was cold and precise, a sharp contrast to the chaotic revelry echoing from the living room. He didn’t scream; he didn't confront Jimena in front of her sycophantic guests. Instead, he stood up, his face a mask of iron, and gathered his four daughters into his arms. They were trembling, their small bodies light as hollowed birds.

"We are leaving," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and resolve. "Right now."

He wrapped them in his own heavy coat, ignoring the way his expensive suit soaked up the dampness of their thin nightgowns. As he carried them toward the back exit, the dining room door swung open. Jimena stood there, her face flushed with gin and arrogance, the diamond necklace catching the overhead light like frozen fire.

"Alejandro? What are you doing, ruining my party?" she hissed, her eyes darting to the girls. "They were perfectly fine. They’re just sensitive, that’s all. Stop being melodramatic."

Alejandro stopped. He turned slowly, holding his daughters close. "I checked the bank statements, Jimena. I checked them while I was on the flight here." He pulled a crumpled printout from his inner pocket, tossing it onto the table among the half-empty wine glasses. "This house is mortgaged to the hilt. The school accounts are empty. And these diamonds?" He pointed to her throat. "They were purchased with the medical trust I set up for their future."

Jimena’s composure faltered, the mask of the elegant socialite slipping to reveal the hollow desperation beneath. "I had to survive! You were never here! I needed security!"

"You had a home," Alejandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You had a family. But you chose to treat them like obstacles to your lifestyle." He didn't wait for her reply. He walked past her, the silence of the house finally beginning to mirror the decay of their marriage.

The Paper Trail

The days following their escape were a whirlwind of legal firestorms. Alejandro moved the girls into a private, secure suite in a different city, away from the prying eyes of the press and the influence of Jimena’s circle.

He didn't just walk away from his marriage; he systematically dismantled the world Jimena had built. He discovered that her "management" of the household had involved blackmailing staff, falsifying financial documents, and creating a network of lies that stretched far beyond their home.

He hired the best forensic accountants and legal counsel. The goal wasn't just divorce—it was total accountability. During the depositions, the depth of the cruelty came to light. Jimena hadn't just neglected the children; she had been systematically isolating them from their father, intercepting his letters, and manipulating their perceptions of his love, all to ensure she remained the sole authority in the household.

Alejandro spent his nights in the girls' new room, reading to them until they fell asleep, ensuring they knew they were safe. The transition was slow. Valeria still hid her snacks; Camila still wept at loud noises; Regina remained guarded; and Sofía still flinched at the sound of a closing door.

But there were signs of healing. One afternoon, while painting in the garden, Sofía reached out and took her father's hand, smiling for the first time in months. It was a small gesture, but it was the foundation upon which he would build their future. He had lost his illusions about his marriage, but he had found the truth of his fatherhood.
