Chapter 4 - The Escape Route

The rain was coming down in torrents as Sheriff Vance’s unmarked Chevrolet Tahoe cut through the thick darkness of Route 9. The windshield wipers swept back and forth in a frantic rhythm, slapping against the glass as the heavy vehicle glided through standing water.

In the backseat, Martha had finally collapsed from sheer emotional exhaustion, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket Vance had retrieved from his trunk. In the front passenger seat, Elena sat staring out at the blurred black trees lining the highway, her hand resting over her bruised ribs with every bump in the road.

Vance kept one hand on the steering wheel while his eyes constantly darted toward the rearview mirror, checking the empty stretch of asphalt behind them.

"Where are we going?" Elena asked, her voice raspy from smoke inhalation and tears.

"My family has a hunting cabin up near Blackwood Ridge," Vance replied, his eyes fixed on the dark road ahead. "It’s off the grid. No cell towers, no digital footprint. Nobody knows about it except my late brother and me. You'll be safe there while I figure out who else in my department is on Thorne's payroll."

Elena turned her head to look at him. "Why are you doing this, Vance? You’re risking your job, your badge... your life. Collins told me no one would ever take my word over a police officer’s."

Vance was quiet for a long moment, the only sound the rhythmic hum of the engine and the splashing of rain. "Twenty years ago," he began slowly, his voice dropping into a deep, painful memory, "I had a sister. She was married to a man who wore a uniform—a high-ranking officer in the state patrol. She tried to tell people what was happening behind closed doors. She came to me."

He tightened his grip on the wheel until his leather gloves groaned under the tension. "I didn't believe her at first. I thought she was exaggerating. I told her to go home and work it out. Three weeks later... we buried her."

He glanced over at Elena, his dark eyes filled with a terrifying, absolute resolve. "I swore on her grave that if I ever saw that kind of evil again, I wouldn't hide behind a badge. I will tear this county down stone by stone before I let Marcus Collins or anyone else lay a finger on you again."

Elena swallowed hard, a lump forming in her throat. For the first time in months, the icy knot of terror in her chest began to loosen, replaced by a strange, flickering spark of hope.

Suddenly, the dash radio crackled to life, static whistling sharply through the quiet cabin of the SUV.

"All units, be on the lookout," a panicked dispatcher’s voice echoed through the speaker. "We have a Code Red at the central detention facility. Prisoner Marcus Collins has been released on emergency judicial transport ordered by District Attorney Thorne. Repeat, Collins is no longer in custody."

Vance slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "Damn it! Thorne rushed through a fraudulent transfer order before sunrise."

Before he could finish the sentence, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights materialized in the rearview mirror, accelerating rapidly out of the darkness behind them. A heavy black pickup truck with an iron push-bumper was closing the distance at terrifying speed.

"Hold on!" Vance shouted, grabbing the steering wheel with both hands and stomping on the gas pedal.

The heavy Tahoe surged forward, its engine roaring, but the black truck behind them was faster. It veered into the left lane, aligning its heavy steel bumper with the rear quarter panel of Vance's vehicle—a classic PIT maneuver used by law enforcement to flip moving cars off the road.

"They found us!" Elena screamed, clutching the dashboard as the truck slammed hard into the side of their SUV.

The Tahoe fishtailed violently across the slick, rain-soaked asphalt, the tires screeching loudly as Vance fought with all his strength to maintain control. Sparks flew into the night sky as metal ground against metal.

Through the rain-streaked side window, Elena caught a glimpse of the driver in the adjacent truck. Sitting in the driver’s seat, wearing a dark rain jacket with a sadistic, triumphant grin plastered across his face, was Marcus Collins.

He turned the steering wheel sharply to the right, crashing into them again with terrifying force, driving Vance’s SUV toward the steep, unprotected cliff edge of Blackwood Ridge.
