Chapter 8 - The Summit Standoff

The ranger station at the summit of Bald Mountain was an old, rusted steel fire tower perched on a bare, rocky peak that overlooked the entire valley. The high-frequency radio dish sat atop a concrete bunker beside the tower, its cables running down into a reinforced utility shed.
Vance slammed the heavy metal door of the bunker shut, sliding the rusted steel deadbolt into place just as heavy rain began to fall once again. He gently lowered Martha onto a wooden bench in the corner.
"Elena, set up the tablet!" Vance ordered, unslinging his shotgun and racking the slide. "Connect the satellite interface to the main transmitter box on the wall!"
Elena pulled the ruggedized tablet from her backpack, her fingers flying across the touch screen. She pulled a heavy thick cable from the station’s main console and plugged it directly into the tablet’s side port. The screen flickered to life, displaying a signal bar that began to fill as it established a connection with the DOJ secure server in Chicago.
CONNECTING TO DOJ SECURE NODE... 34%... 58%...
Outside, the baying of the bloodhounds grew terrifyingly close, echoing off the bare rock face of the summit.
BANG!
A heavy tactical boot slammed against the reinforced steel door of the bunker. The heavy metal groaned under the impact, but the deadbolt held.
"Vance!" Collins’s voice roared from outside, amplified by a megaphone. "It’s over! We have the entire peak surrounded! You have nowhere left to run!"
Vance stepped up to a narrow vision slit in the steel door, looking out at the foggy summit. Collins was standing behind an armored police vehicle fifty yards away, surrounded by six heavily armed mercenaries dressed in tactical gear. Above them, a black helicopter hovered in the mist, its powerful searchlight shining down onto the bunker roof.
"Elena, how much longer?" Vance asked without taking his eyes off the target.
"The file is huge!" Elena said desperately, staring at the progress bar on the screen. "It’s uploading raw 4K security footage! 72%... 81%..."
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Automatic gunfire erupted outside, heavy armor-piercing rounds slamming into the concrete bunker walls, showering the interior with concrete dust and sparks. Martha screamed, dropping to the floor and covering her head.
Vance raised his shotgun through the narrow shooting slit, lined up his sights on the searchlight of the armored vehicle, and pulled the trigger.
BOOM!
The glass searchlight shattered into a shower of sparks, plunging the mercenaries into momentary confusion.
"Breaching charge on the door!" Collins shouted to his team. "Blow the lock!"
Two mercenaries moved forward, carrying a black rectangular explosive charge toward the bunker door.
"They're going to breach!" Vance called out, pulling a fragmentation grenade from his captured tactical bag. He pulled the pin, cooked it for two seconds, and shoved it through the narrow vision slit.
The grenade dropped onto the rocks directly in front of the advancing mercenaries.
EXPLOSION!
A blinding flash and a roaring detonation shook the bunker. The shockwave blew out the small glass windows, throwing the two mercenaries backward onto the rocks.
"Elena!" Vance yelled over the ringing in his ears.
"It’s done!" Elena shouted, tears pouring down her cheeks as the screen flashed a brilliant, neon-green verification prompt.
UPLOAD COMPLETE. FILE RECEIVED BY FEDERAL PROSECUTOR SARAH CHEN. STATUS: FEDERAL WARRANTS ISSUED.
At that exact moment, the satellite tablet’s speaker crackled to life. A crisp, authoritative female voice cut through the sound of gunfire outside.
"Sheriff Vance, this is Special Agent Sarah Chen, Department of Justice," the voice announced clearly. "We have received the evidence. Federal Marshals and the FBI Field Office in Chicago are airborne. Hold your position. All local law enforcement orders issued by DA Thorne have been federally revoked."
Vance picked up the tablet, pressing the talk button. "Agent Chen, they are breaching my position right now with heavy weapons. We need immediate air support!"

"Two minutes, Sheriff," Chen replied. "Hold on."
Before Vance could respond, a massive explosion rocked the steel door of the bunker. The heavy deadbolt snapped like brittle plastic, and the iron door flew inward, crashing against the concrete floor in a cloud of thick smoke and dust.
