Chapter 4: The Shadow Protocol

Chapter 4: The Shadow Protocol
The purge of the Sterling board sent shockwaves through the global financial markets, but inside the walls of the Sterling Estate, a different kind of battle was being fought.
Three weeks had passed since Richard’s arrest. Aria sat in the grand library of the estate, surrounded by towering shelves of ancient leather books. The physical therapy had been brutal, but today, for the first time in three years, Aria wasn't sitting in her wheelchair. She was standing by the tall glass windows, her hands lightly gripping a sleek, carbon-fiber cane.
Marcus stood a few paces behind her, keeping a watchful eye on her balance, his face bearing a rare expression of quiet pride.
"You're making incredible progress, Miss Aria," Marcus murmured.
"The human body is resilient when it finally has something to fight for, Marcus," Aria said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. The cane clicked softly against the hardwood floor. "But we aren't safe yet. Richard was a symptom, not the disease. The Cayman accounts revealed that someone else was funding his legal defense and providing the encryption codes to bypass my grandfather’s security system."
Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. "We intercepted a heavily encrypted transmission originating from a luxury penthouse in Monaco last night. The digital signature belongs to the Blackwood Syndicate—the very same rival conglomerate that tried to hostilely take over our European branches ten years ago."
Aria’s jaw tightened. "They wanted to break the Sterling Empire from the inside out. They used Victoria to ruin our reputation, used Richard to bleed our finances, and left me as a ghost so the company would have no true leader."
Before Marcus could answer, the security monitor on the library desk chimed. A red alert flashed across the screen.
"Motion sensors at the eastern perimeter have been tripped," Marcus said, his hand immediately moving to the inside of his jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of his concealed firearm. "Miss Aria, step away from the window. Now."
The lights inside the library suddenly died, plunging the massive room into complete darkness. The only illumination came from the violent flashes of lightning from a sudden summer storm outside.
"They're not waiting for a boardroom meeting anymore," Aria whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her mind remaining icy cold. She didn't panic. She didn't freeze.
"Shadow Protocol is active. Stay behind me," Marcus commanded, his voice a low, lethal growl in the dark.
The heavy glass panels of the library window suddenly shattered inward. Three dark figures dressed in tactical gear erupted through the opening, the shards of glass raining down onto the floor like lethal confetti. The red laser sights of their weapons sliced through the darkness, searching for Aria's silhouette.
But Marcus was faster.
Before the first intruder could even level his weapon, Marcus moved like a shadow incarnate. A deafening roar echoed through the library as Marcus fired, his shot finding its mark with terrifying precision. The first intruder dropped to the floor with a heavy thud.
The remaining two attackers opened fire, their suppressed weapons spitting lines of silent fire into the bookshelves. Pages erupted into the air like snow. Marcus ducked behind a massive oak desk, grabbing Aria by the waist and pulling her down with him, shielding her body entirely with his own.
"Are you hit?" Marcus hissed over the sound of splintering wood.
"No," Aria gasped, her fingers clutching the ancient family ring. "The desk won't hold much longer. They have high-caliber rounds."
"Then we change the playing field," Aria said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, brilliant realization. She reached beneath the lip of the oak desk, her fingers feeling for the hidden manual override button her grandfather had installed decades ago.
She pressed it.
Instantly, the estate's emergency high-intensity floodlights flared to life, illuminating the library with a blinding, white glare that instantly overwhelmed the intruders' night-vision goggles. The two remaining men screamed, dropping their weapons to claw at their blinded eyes.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He stepped out from behind the desk, his movements fluid, ruthless, and absolute. In a matter of seconds, both men were disarmed and pinned to the floor, their faces pressed hard into the shattered glass.
Marcus stood over them, his chest rising and falling evenly, his gaze colder than absolute zero. He reached down, ripping the tactical mask off the lead intruder.
"Who sent you?" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with an implicit promise of unmitigated pain.
The intruder coughed, blood trickling from his lip, but he remained silent.

Aria walked out from the shadows, her cane clicking rhythmically against the floor. She looked down at the assassin, her face carrying the absolute, terrifying majesty of a true Sterling ruler. She reached down, her sapphire ring catching the brilliant white floodlights.
"You don't need to answer him," Aria said to the assassin, her voice echoing with a chilling calmness. "Because I already know. Tell your masters in Monaco that the Sterling Empire doesn't hide anymore. If they want a war, they can look me in the eye when I take everything they own."
