Chapter 2: The Collaboration

The school’s annual Charity Bake Sale was approaching, and the stakes were higher than any wedding. The class was responsible for creating the center-piece dessert, and the teacher had designated Mia as the "Project Coordinator." The rest of the kids, including Leo, were relegated to menial tasks—mixing flour, folding napkins, and watching from afar.

Leo watched as Mia struggled. A cake was more than just batter and heat; it required a structural integrity that their motley crew of seven-year-olds lacked. Disaster struck three days before the event when the foundation of their masterpiece—a model of the school—leaned precariously to the left.

Mia’s hands, usually so steady, began to tremble. She was holding the piping bag, her eyes shimmering with the threat of tears. She had projected an image of perfection for so long, and now, the reality was crumbling.

Leo stepped forward. He didn't ask for permission. He didn't run. He grabbed a set of wooden skewers and a roll of heavy-duty tape from his pocket—items he’d been saving for his own projects. "It needs a spine," he whispered.

For the next four hours, the playground’s two most famous rivals worked in complete silence. They were a machine. Leo’s engineering instinct met Mia’s aesthetic precision. They braced the structure, reinforced the sugar-glass windows, and adjusted the temperature of the frosting. They weren't fighting for control anymore; they were fighting for the cake’s survival. When the final touch was placed, they stood back, gasping. It was a masterpiece. It was solid, beautiful, and most importantly, it was standing.
