Chapter 3: The Crisis

The morning of the Charity Bake Sale arrived with the heavy scent of rain. The school hall was a buzz of activity, but the atmosphere was tense. A group of older, mischievous kids had been eyeing their model cake all morning, whispering and snickering.
Leo was on high alert. He had learned from Mia that protection was an active duty. During the lunch break, he saw them—three boys moving purposefully toward the display table. His heart hammered in his chest. His natural instinct was to dash across the floor to stop them, but he remembered the golden rule: No running. He slowed his pace, walking with a steady, determined gait that screamed 'authority.' He intercepted them just as the leader reached out a finger to smudge the frosting. "Wait," Leo said, his voice projecting a calm he didn't feel. Mia appeared at his side, her presence radiating the same unwavering strength.
"This isn't yours," Mia stated, her eyes locked onto the boy's.
"What are you going to do?" the boy challenged. "You’re just kids."

Suddenly, a spill occurred—a misplaced tray of lemonade sent by a clumsy passing student cascaded toward the table. If it hit, the cake would be ruined. Time seemed to slow. Leo and Mia didn't look at each other; they reacted as a single unit. Leo grabbed a nearby tablecloth, and in a movement that would have made a stage magician jealous, he whipped it up to block the splash, while Mia shoved the cake stand into the safe zone.
They stood there, breathless, covered in a light spray of lemonade, but the cake remained pristine. They hadn't run, they hadn't panicked, and they had protected what they loved. The older boys stood in stunned silence, then slowly retreated.
