Chapter 8: The Ghost at the Doorstep

Chapter 8: The Ghost at the Doorstep

The first year of their marriage in their upstate New York home was a sanctuary. For Leah, waking up to the sound of Evan and Ellie laughing in the kitchen over burnt pancakes was a quiet miracle. But peace, especially for a man like Evan who had walked away from a powerful, controlling family empire to choose love, is rarely left undisturbed.
It started on a Tuesday afternoon. Leah was in the garden, watching Ellie chase a golden retriever puppy they had adopted, when a sleek, black town car pulled into their gravel driveway. The heavy crunch of the tires signaled an intrusion before the door even opened. Out stepped Victoria—Evan’s former fiancée, the woman whose engagement was shattered the day Ellie’s true paternity was revealed. Victoria looked flawless, her sharp features set in a mask of polite disdain.
"Leah," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she approached the porch. "Playing house, I see. It’s almost convincing."
Leah’s protective instincts flared instantly. She stepped between Victoria and the yard where Ellie was playing. "Victoria. You aren’t welcome here. Evan made that clear a year ago."
"Evan makes a lot of impulsive decisions," Victoria replied, pulling a thick manila envelope from her designer bag. "Like abandoning his position at his father’s firm, leaving millions on the table, and humiliating my family in the process. I’m not here for a social call, Leah. I’m here because Evan’s father is filing a lawsuit to seize Evan’s new independent venture. And unless Evan agrees to step down and return to the family fold—without you—they will ruin him."

Leah’s blood ran cold. She knew Evan had sacrificed his inheritance and his relationship with his ruthless father to protect her and Ellie, but she hadn’t realized his family was actively plotting to destroy his new life.
When Evan came home that evening, the heavy silence in the house tipped him off immediately. Leah showed him the documents. Evan’s jaw tightened, his eyes darkening with a familiar, dangerous resolve. He pulled Leah into his chest, kissing the top of her head. "They think they can use my company to force me back," he whispered, his voice trembling with contained fury. "They don't understand that I would burn it all to the ground before I ever let them threaten my family again."
