Chapter 2 : The Shattered Gala

The silence in the pavilion was so heavy you could hear the wax dripping from the candles onto the marble path.

Bianca Sterling was the first to break it, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "Is this a joke? Nathaniel, did you invite us here to be humiliated by a servant?"

Nathaniel didn't answer. His eyes were locked on his five-year-old son, whose small hands were desperately clutching the fabric of Claire’s simple white apron. Oliver, who usually shrank away from physical contact, was pressing his face into Claire’s side as if she were the only safe harbor in a raging storm.

Claire Bennett’s face had gone completely pale. She felt the weight of a hundred judgmentals eyes burning into her back. "I... I'm so sorry, Mr. Harrington," she whispered, her voice trembling as she gently tried to untangle Oliver’s fingers. "I was just bringing the dessert tray. Oliver, sweetheart, you need to go back to your daddy."

"No!" Oliver’s voice was small but fiercely stubborn. He gripped her tighter. "Don't go away."

Madison Vale stood up, smoothing down her copper satin dress with a tight, offended smile. "Well, it seems the Harrington household has very peculiar boundaries. Nathaniel, if your staff is allowed to interfere with family decisions, perhaps you aren't ready to move on after all."

"I think it’s a matter of discipline," Celeste Monroe chimed in, her tone dripping with sweet venom. "A proper nanny wouldn't allow a child to make such a public scene. But then again, she’s just kitchen staff, isn't she?"

The insults stung, but Claire didn't look up to defend herself. Her priority was the crying child. She knelt on the hard marble floor, completely ignoring the stains it would leave on her uniform, and brought herself down to Oliver’s eye level.

"Hey," Claire murmured softly, her voice a soothing contrast to the harsh whispers around them. "Look at me, Ollie."

Oliver peeked out with tear-filled eyes.

"Remember what we talked about?" Claire smiled warmly, wiping a tear from his cheek with her thumb. "The brave little knight always keeps his composure. Your dad loves you very much, and he’s waiting for you. Why don't you go show him how brave you are?"

Oliver sniffled, looking back at Nathaniel, then at Claire. "Will you still be in the kitchen?"

"I'll be right here," she promised.

Slowly, reluctantly, Oliver let go of her. He walked back down the aisle, his little head held high, and took Nathaniel’s hand.

Nathaniel felt a surge of overwhelming emotion. He looked from his son to Claire, who was now standing up, picking up her silver tray with trembling hands, and bowing her head respectfully before retreating through the side door.

"The dinner is concluded," Nathaniel announced, his voice booming across the pavilion with an authority that left no room for argument. "Thank you all for coming. My assistant will see you out."

"Nathaniel!" his mother, Victoria Harrington, gasped, stepping out from the crowd. "You cannot be serious! You are turning away the most eligible women in the city for..."

"Goodnight, Mother," Nathaniel said coldly. He picked up Oliver in his arms and walked straight toward the mansion, leaving the elite society of the city muttering in shock.

That night, after Oliver finally fell asleep holding his favorite stuffed bear, Nathaniel sat in his study. The security cameras of the mansion were pulled up on his laptop. He skipped back through weeks, then months of footage.

What he saw made his throat tighten.

While he was away at late-night board meetings, trying to drown his grief in work, Claire wasn't just cleaning the house. The footage showed her sitting outside Oliver’s door when he had night terrors, singing a soft, familiar melody through the crack of the door until the boy calmed down. It showed her making pancakes shaped like Mickey Mouse, and hiding notes in his backpack.

She had been healing his son in the shadows, asking for nothing in return.

Nathaniel closed the laptop, a sudden, fierce determination taking hold of him. He needed to talk to Claire Bennett. First thing in the morning.
