Chapter 4 : The Gathering Storm

Claire’s return to the Harrington mansion changed everything. She no longer wore the apron; instead, she wore simple, elegant dresses that Nathaniel had ordered for her. Her days were spent helping Oliver with his reading, playing in the garden, and teaching him how to paint.
For the first time in two years, laughter echoed through the grand hallways.
And slowly, imperceptibly, Nathaniel found himself coming home earlier. He stopped staying late at the office. He wanted to be there for dinner. He wanted to see the way Claire’s eyes lit up when she spoke, and the gentle, patient way she handled Oliver’s tantrums.
One evening, as it started to rain heavily outside, the three of them sat by the fireplace in the living room. Oliver had fallen asleep with his head on Claire’s lap. Claire was softly brushing his curls away from his forehead.
Nathaniel sat down on the sofa next to her. "You have a gift, Claire. You bring peace wherever you go."
Claire blushed, looking down. "I just give him what every child deserves. Unconditional love."
Nathaniel looked at her lips, then up to her deep brown eyes. The space between them seemed to shrink. "And what about you? Who gives you unconditional love?"
"I've been alone for a long time, Nathaniel," she said softly.
"You're not alone anymore," he murmured. Nathaniel leaned in, his heart pounding, and gently placed his hand on her cheek. Claire didn't pull away. Their lips met in a soft, tender kiss that tasted of unspoken promises and deep relief.
But their happiness was short-lived.
The heavy front doors of the mansion burst open. Victoria Harrington strode into the living room, dripping with rainwater and fury. Behind her were two men in dark suits.
"Get your hands off my son, you gold-digging leach!" Victoria hissed, pointing a manicured finger at Claire.
Oliver woke up with a start, crying at the loud noise. Claire immediately held him close, shielding him.
"Mother! What is the meaning of this?" Nathaniel stood up, his face dark with rage.
"The meaning of this is protecting this family!" Victoria threw a legal document onto the coffee table. "The board of Harrington Hotels has caught wind of your... sordid affair with the help. They are threatening to remove you as CEO for moral turpitude. And more importantly, I have filed an emergency petition for temporary custody of Oliver. You are unfit, Nathaniel. You are letting a stranger manipulate your child to steal our fortune!"
Claire felt a cold dread wash over her. She looked at the custody papers. Victoria was using her presence to destroy Nathaniel and take Oliver away.

"This is my house, and Oliver is my son!" Nathaniel roared.
"Not for long, if you keep this woman here," Victoria said with a smirk. "Choose, Nathaniel. Your empire and your son, or this pathetic nobody."
