Chapter 9 - The Trial and Total Reckoning

Six months later.
The Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to capacity. Journalists, legal observers, and members of the public crowded the gallery seats for the final sentencing hearing of State of Illinois v. Cassandra Miller and Michael Whitaker.
Ellen sat beside me in the front row, wearing a simple, elegant dark gray dress. Her physical bruises had healed, but the calm, quiet strength in her eyes was brand new. She held my hand tightly, her fingers interwoven with mine.
At the defense tables sat Cassandra and Michael, both wearing brown prison uniforms.
Cassandra’s high-fashion arrogance was completely gone. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, her face hollow and pale. Beside her, Michael sat staring at the wooden table, looking like a hollow shell of a man.
Judge Sarah Montgomery sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, reviewing the pre-sentencing reports.
"In my twenty-five years on the bench," Judge Montgomery began, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom, "I have seen countless cases of physical violence. But rarely have I witnessed an act so utterly devoid of basic human decency as what occurred on the night of October twelfth."
She looked down at Cassandra over her glasses.
"Cassandra Miller," the judge continued. "You targeted an innocent woman who came to celebrate your marriage. You struck her, humiliated her, and treated her like trash simply because she did not fit your distorted perception of social prestige. You have shown zero genuine remorse throughout this trial."
The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp CRACK.
"On the count of Aggravated Battery and Felony Extortion, I sentence you to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections without the possibility of early parole."

Cassandra let out a shrill gasp, collapsing back into her chair as tears streamed down her face. Her public defender tried to comfort her, but she shoved his hand away hysterically.
Judge Montgomery then turned her gaze to Michael.
