Chapter 10 - The Quiet After the Storm

"Michael Whitaker," she said, her tone dripping with profound disappointment. "You were blessed with every privilege a child could ask for—loving parents, wealth, education, and opportunity. Yet, when your own mother was being assaulted before your eyes, you joined in the abuse. You betrayed the sacred bond between parent and child for the sake of vanity."

Michael bowed his head, tears dripping onto his prison jumpsuit.

"On the count of Felony Assault and Abuse of an Elderly Dependent, I sentence you to five years in state prison, followed by three years of mandatory probation and five hundred hours of community service."

CRACK.

The gavel struck the block, sealing their fate forever.

As officers stepped forward to escort them out through the side doors, Michael turned his head one last time. He looked directly at Ellen, his lips trembling as he whispered, "Mom... I'm sorry..."

Ellen didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She simply looked at him with quiet, serene detachment, before turning her eyes back to me and taking a deep, peaceful breath.

The nightmare was finally over.
