Chapter 2 : The Weight of the Mask

The laughter in the ballroom didn’t die down; it shifted into a predatory hum. I watched them—the people who had toasted to my health only months ago, now salivating over the prospect of my downfall. Vanessa was the ringleader, her silhouette sharp against the velvet curtains, her eyes tracking not my face, but the twitch of my fingers, looking for the tremors of a man she assumed was broken.

"A toast!" my cousin Marcus boomed, raising his glass high. "To the return of the 'prodigal' heir. May your spirit be as strong as your legs are... flexible."

Another wave of mocking laughter rolled through the room. I didn't flinch. I kept my gaze fixed on the patterns in the marble floor, my silence fueling their hubris. The longer I stayed "broken," the wider they opened their mouths, revealing the rot beneath their polished veneers.

Clara remained at my side, a silent anchor in a storm of cruelty. Her hand, which had smoothed the blanket over my perfectly functional legs, was now busy clearing an empty glass from the side table. As she passed, she leaned in, her voice barely a breath. "They are wolves, sir. They do not know they are hunting a trap."

I looked up at her. For the first time, I truly saw her. She was twenty-two, with eyes that held the weight of a life lived in service to people who didn't know her last name. She was the one who had seen me at my lowest—even when I was pretending to be lower—and never once had she looked at me with anything but genuine, uncalculating empathy.

"Why stay, Clara?" I whispered, my voice raspy. "You've seen how they treat me. You’re a target by association."

"Because someone has to be a witness to the truth," she replied simply, then moved away to blend into the shadows of the catering staff.

The rest of the night was a masterclass in betrayal. I watched Daniel, the man I’d trusted as my right-hand man for a decade, huddled in a corner with Vanessa. I could read his lips from across the room. “The board vote is on Friday. If he doesn't walk into that boardroom, he loses the controlling stake.”

Vanessa nodded, her expression cold. She wasn't just planning to break the engagement; she was planning a hostile takeover. She wanted the company, the fortune, and the legacy. She thought she was discarding a broken toy, but she was actually handing me the evidence I needed to dismantle her.

When the last guest departed, the silence that fell over the estate was heavy. I wheeled myself into the study, the dark wood paneling providing a sanctuary. I stood up.

The sensation of my feet against the cool mahogany floor felt like a rebirth. I paced the room, my muscles coiled and ready, the phantom weight of the wheelchair suddenly feeling like a heavy chain I was finally discarding. I walked to the wall safe and pulled out a dossier—the true audit of the company’s assets, the offshore accounts Vanessa had been siphoning money into, and the recordings of every "concerned" business partner who had offered to buy me out at pennies on the dollar.

I had been paralyzed, yes—but only by the fear of losing what I thought was real. Now that I knew it was all an illusion, I was finally free to act.
