Chapter 7: The Monster in the Cage

Chapter 7: The Monster in the Cage

The maximum-security federal detention center sat on a desolate island of grey concrete and razor wire, fifty miles outside the city limits. It was a bleak, unforgiving fortress designed to strip a human being of their identity and replace it with a number. As the heavy steel doors clanged shut behind Evelyn, the sound reverberated down the stark, fluorescent-lit hallway—a stark contrast to the plush velvet and mahogany world she had just conquered.

She wasn't here to gloat. She was here for answers.

Evelyn was escorted into a private interrogation room. It was painfully simple: a metal table bolted to the floor, two metal chairs, and a two-way mirror. She placed the black leather journal—the one she had found in Daniel's safe—on the table. She sat down, her posture rigidly straight, her expression an impenetrable mask of calm. Inside, however, her heart beat like a war drum.

Ten minutes later, the door on the opposite side of the room opened.

Two heavily armed guards escorted Daniel Vance into the room. The sight of him sent a violent jolt through Evelyn’s nervous system, a ghost of the old fear trying to claw its way back to the surface. But as she truly looked at him, the fear evaporated, replaced by a cold, clinical disgust.

The invincible billionaire was gone. Daniel’s custom-tailored suits had been replaced by an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. His perfectly styled hair was messy and flat. The arrogance was still there, etched into the sharp angles of his jaw, but his eyes were sunken, shadowed with exhaustion and the jarring realization of his own mortality.

The guards shoved him into the chair across from Evelyn and shackled his wrists to the metal loop on the table. They stepped outside, leaving the two of them alone.

For a long moment, neither spoke. Daniel leaned back in his chair, a cruel, mocking smile playing on his lips. He let his eyes travel over her pristine ivory suit, lingering on her face.

"I have to admit, Evie," he rasped, his voice rougher than usual. "White is definitely your color. You look exactly like the tragic, triumphant heroine the media wants you to be. Bravo. How does it feel? Sitting in my chair? Spending my money?"

Evelyn didn't blink. She didn't rise to the bait. Instead, she slowly pushed the black leather journal across the metal table until it stopped an inch from his shackled hands.

Daniel’s mocking smile instantly vanished. His eyes locked onto the book, a flicker of genuine, unadulterated panic crossing his features before he forced his mask back into place.

"I don't know what that is," he said coldly, looking away.

"Don't insult my intelligence, Daniel. We don't have the time," Evelyn said, her voice eerily calm, soft, yet commanding. "August 15th. Leo’s birthday. That was your combination. I’ve read it. I’ve seen the ciphers. I’ve seen the money moving through the shadow accounts." She leaned forward slightly, her eyes locking onto his. "And I saw the photograph."

Daniel stiffened. He stared at his chained hands, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles ticked.

"You didn't meet me by accident, did you?" Evelyn continued, her voice gaining an edge of steel. "You didn't pursue me because you loved me. I was targeted. Vetted. And approved. Approved by 'The Phantom'. So, you are going to sit there and tell me exactly who that is, what they want with my son, and why they left a crushed toy car on my porch this morning."

At the mention of the toy car, Daniel’s head snapped up. His eyes were wide, filled not with anger, but with absolute terror. "They came to the house?" he whispered, his voice trembling. "They left a crushed car?"

"Yes."

Daniel let out a harsh, breathless laugh, running a shackled hand through his messy hair. "You stupid, arrogant girl. You thought I was the monster? You thought locking me and my mother in a cage meant you won the game?" He leaned forward, the chains rattling loudly against the metal table. "We weren't the architects, Evelyn. We were the gatekeepers! My mother built this empire on a loan from the devil, and the devil is calling in his debts!"

"Who is he, Daniel?!" Evelyn slammed her hands on the table, startling him. "Give me a name!"

"He doesn't have a name! He’s a ghost!" Daniel yelled back, his voice echoing in the small room. "He built the Vance Conglomerate from the shadows. He funded my mother’s rise to power. But his obsession... his real prize... is bloodlines. Legacy. He wanted a perfect heir. My genetics, combined with someone... malleable. Someone with no powerful family to protect her. Someone like you."

Evelyn felt the blood drain from her face, the horrific reality of her existence settling over her like a heavy shroud. "Leo... he wants Leo."

"Leo is his investment," Daniel whispered frantically. "I was supposed to break you. I was supposed to mold Leo into a sociopath, a perfect corporate weapon for the Phantom to use. By putting me in here, you've ruined a twenty-year plan. He isn't going to just take the company back, Evelyn. He is going to erase you. You and everyone standing between him and that boy."

Daniel slumped back in his chair, suddenly looking like a broken, terrified child. "You have to take Leo and run. Change your names. Leave the country. Because if the Phantom has stepped out of the shadows, you are already dead."

Evelyn stared at the man who had tormented her for half a decade. He was truly terrified. But as she looked at him, she realized something fundamental had changed within her. Running was what the old Evelyn would do. Running was what a victim did.

She stood up slowly, picking up the leather journal. She looked down at Daniel, her eyes blazing with a cold, blue fire.

"I'm not running, Daniel," she said, her voice echoing with dangerous finality. "For five years, you made me believe I was weak. You built a cage around me. But all you really did was teach me how to survive in the dark."

She turned toward the door, knocking twice for the guards.

"Evelyn!" Daniel shouted, straining against his chains. "You can't fight a ghost! He will destroy you!"

May you like

Evelyn paused at the door, looking over her shoulder. A fierce, predatory smile touched her lips. "He’s about to find out that a mother protecting her child is far more dangerous than any ghost. I'm going to find your Phantom, Daniel. And I am going to bury him right next to your legacy."

The door opened, and she stepped out into the cold, harsh light of the prison corridor, ready for war.
