Chapter 9: The Ghost in the Machine

The security protocols at Evelyn’s private estate were upgraded by noon the following day. Perimeter lasers, biometric scanners, and a rotating detail of Marcus’s most trusted tactical operatives transformed the sprawling mansion into an impenetrable fortress. Yet, inside the nursery, everything was peaceful. Seven-year-old Leo was sitting on the plush rug, entirely oblivious to the dark storm swirling around his world, happily building a towering castle out of magnetic blocks.

Evelyn stood in the doorway, watching him. The gentle curve of his smile, the bright curiosity in his eyes—he was her entire universe. Every breath she took, every tactical move she planned, was for him.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a secure ping from Julian.

“Meet me in the basement data-vault immediately. We found a live ping.”

Five minutes later, Evelyn stood in the chilled, humming subterranean vault where Julian had set up his mobile server arrays. Rows of monitors cast a pale blue glow over his face as his fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard.

"What did you find, Julian?" she asked, her voice hushed.

"Remember that Geneva node I told you about?" Julian said, pointing at a cascading waterfall of green code on the primary screen. "Ten minutes ago, it didn't just ping—it initiated an active outbound data transfer to a local receiver inside city limits. Someone here, in this city, is directly communicating with the Phantom's master archive."

Rachel, who had been analyzing financial ledgers at a side desk, gasped softly. "Look at this timing. Every time a major corporate board member opposes your restructuring plan, a sudden liquidity squeeze hits their personal accounts from an Aegis Prime shell company. Someone on your own board of directors is feeding internal intelligence straight to the Phantom."

Evelyn felt a cold spike of adrenaline. "Who?"

Julian zoomed in on a decrypted communication packet. The sender's ID was masked behind a high-grade military encryption cipher, but a small metadata tag slipped through the firewall—a digital watermark embedded in every secure PDF sent from the board’s private portal.

"Arthur Pendelton," Julian said grimly. "Your senior managing director. The man who has sat at your right hand since the merger, pretending to be your staunchest ally."

Evelyn stared at the name, a profound sense of betrayal washing over her, instantly hardening into pure tactical focus. Arthur. The man who had patted her shoulder after long board meetings, whispering words of encouragement while secretly selling her every move to the monster in the shadows.

"He thinks he’s playing a chess match," Evelyn said quietly, a dangerous glint in her eyes. "He thinks I’m just a pawn waiting to be sacrificed."

"What are our orders?" Marcus asked, stepping out from the shadows near the vault door, his hand resting casually near his sidearm. "Do we move in and arrest him?"

May you like

"No," Evelyn said, her voice dropping an octave, rich with calculated menace. "An arrest is too clean, too quiet. Arthur wants to play chess? We are going to let him make his master move. We are going to feed him a fabricated piece of intelligence—a fake blueprint for our company's core asset—and watch exactly where he delivers it."

Julian grinned, a fierce competitive spark lighting up his eyes. "Setting the honey-trap now, Ms. Vance. Let's see how fast our little rat runs to his master."
