Chapter 5: Inside Federal Custody — Arthur’s Desperation and Betrayal

Deep within the high-security holding facility downtown, Arthur Vance was experiencing a nightmare from which there was no waking up. Stripped of his tailored suits, wearing the standard-issue orange jumpsuit, he sat at a stainless-steel table in the attorney visitation booth, staring at his reflection in the smudged glass.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and his high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Vance (no relation, thankfully), walked in looking exhausted and deeply skeptical. Jonathan dropped a thick manila folder onto the table with a heavy thud.
"It’s worse than you told me, Arthur," the lawyer said without preamble, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "The federal prosecutors aren't just looking at wire fraud and tax evasion anymore. They’ve uncovered evidence that you systematically funneled pension funds from your subsidiary companies into your private offshore accounts to cover your trading losses."
"That’s standard corporate maneuvering!" Arthur snapped, slamming his fist against the metal table, though his bravado sounded hollow even to his own ears. "Every executive hedges their bets when the market gets volatile. I intended to pay it back!"
"Intent doesn't matter when the ledger shows sixty million dollars missing and a paper trail signed by your own digital authorization key," Jonathan replied flatly. "And to make matters worse, your co-conspirators in the Cayman Islands have already cut deals with federal investigators. They handed over the encrypted server logs. You are the sole fall guy, Arthur. The prosecutors are pushing for a mandatory minimum of fifteen years."
Fifteen years. The number echoed in Arthur’s skull like a tolling bell. Fifteen years behind bars meant the complete annihilation of his youth, his reputation, and his life.
"What about Eleanor?" Arthur hissed, his eyes narrowing with bitter hatred. "She knew about the accounts! She aided and abetted by withholding information! Why isn't she sitting in this cell with me?"

Jonathan stared at him with a mixture of pity and contempt. "Because, Arthur, your wife didn't just walk away—she executed a textbook whistleblower immunity protocol coordinated with federal prosecutors six months ago. She documented everything, turned over her personal archives, and cooperated fully with the SEC. Legally, she is a protected witness. You didn't just lose a wife; you walked straight into a legal trap of your own making."
Arthur slumped back in his chair, the crushing weight of his arrogance finally breaking whatever sanity he had left. He had underestimated Eleanor at every turn, viewing her as a fragile accessory rather than a brilliant strategist. And now, that catastrophic underestimation was costing him his entire world.
