Chapter 9: The Courtroom Showdown — Arthur’s Arrogance Crumbles

The federal trial of Arthur Vance began on a brisk autumn morning in the federal district courthouse downtown. The courtroom was packed to capacity with financial journalists, former business associates, and curious onlookers eager to witness the fall of one of the Pacific Northwest’s most arrogant corporate tyrants.

Arthur walked into the courtroom in handcuffs, flanked by federal marshals. His hair was prematurely graying at the temples, and the expensive tailored suits had been permanently replaced by the drab orange jumpsuit. He scanned the gallery, his eyes briefly locking onto Eleanor, who sat in the front row next to Marcus and David. Her expression was completely unbothered, her posture radiating quiet, untouchable grace. That serene composure infuriated Arthur more than any insult could have.

The prosecution’s case was a masterclass in airtight precision. Marcus had ensured that every financial document, every digital signature, and every shell company ledger was presented with undeniable clarity. Witness after witness—former accountants, corrupted junior executives who had cut immunity deals, and corporate partners—testified to Arthur’s relentless greed, intimidation tactics, and systemic fraud.

When the prosecution called Eleanor to the stand, a hushed murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Arthur sat forward at the defense table, his knuckles turning white as he stared at his ex-wife with unfiltered venom.

Eleanor walked to the witness box with measured, elegant steps. She took the oath with a steady voice, her composure unshakable under the intense scrutiny of the courtroom.

The federal prosecutor stepped up to the podium. "Ms. Vance, during your marriage to the defendant, did you ever become aware of systematic financial irregularities within Vance Global Enterprises?"

"Yes, I did," Eleanor answered clearly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "Approximately six months prior to the corporate audit, I discovered undocumented offshore accounts and fraudulent asset transfers designed to mask mounting trading losses."

"And how did the defendant react when you confronted him regarding these illegal transactions?"

Eleanor paused for a fraction of a second, recalling the terrifying dinner party where Arthur had lost control. "He attempted to intimidate me, dismissed my concerns, and utilized psychological coercion to ensure my silence. When that failed, he resorted to physical intimidation."

At the defense table, Arthur lost his temper. He slammed his hand against the wood, half-rising from his chair. "That is a complete lie! She set me up! She’s a manipulative schemer!"

"Order in the courtroom!" the federal judge banged his gavel sharply, glaring down at Arthur. "One more outburst from the defense table, Mr. Vance, and you will be held in direct contempt of court and removed immediately."

Arthur sank back into his chair, chest heaving with rage, realizing too late that his explosive temper—the very weapon he had used to terrorize Eleanor for years—was now sealing his doom in front of the jury.
