Chapter 3: The Price of Defiance

Chapter 3: The Price of Defiance

The morning after the incident, the Blackwood estate did not wake to the usual serene elegance. Instead, it was besieged. News of Julian’s public rejection of his fiancée, Beatrice, had leaked to the press, and the headlines were blistering: “Heir to Blackwood Fortune Abandons Matriarchal Match for Servant.”

Inside the library, Julian sat at the expansive oak desk, surrounded by legal documents and ledgers he hadn't touched in years. He was systematically dismantling his own life, cancelling contracts and severing ties with the corporate board members who had been his mother’s closest allies. Mia, still nursing the physical and emotional wounds of the previous night, stood by the window, watching the gates where paparazzi clamored like vultures.

"You’re destroying your future, Julian," Mia said, her voice soft but laced with the weight of reality. "They won't just walk away. Your mother is calling an emergency board meeting. She intends to strip you of your title and your access to the accounts. You’re trading everything for a woman who has nothing."

Julian didn't look up from the documents. "I’m trading a gilded prison for a life I finally own, Mia. And as for having nothing—you have a strength that this entire household, with all its billions, lacks. I’m not losing my future; I’m finally starting it."

The door creaked open, and Eleanor, Julian’s mother, swept into the room. She was the embodiment of the Blackwood legacy: cold, sharp, and utterly immovable. She didn't look at Mia, as if the maid were nothing more than a piece of furniture to be ignored.

"You have twenty-four hours to end this farce, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice devoid of maternal warmth. "Beatrice’s family is threatening to pull their funding. If you don't issue a public apology and reinstate the engagement, I will invoke the ‘Incompetence Clause’ in your father’s will. You will be penniless, and this girl... well, she will be left to the wolves."

Julian stood up, his height dwarfing his mother’s. "Then let me be penniless. I’d rather have nothing in my pockets and everything in my soul than continue this charade."
