Chapter 4: The Shadow of the Past

While the board meeting loomed like a guillotine, Julian and Mia were forced to navigate a house that had suddenly turned hostile. The other staff, once friends to Mia, now avoided her, fearful of being caught in the fallout of Julian’s rebellion.

They retreated to the old carriage house at the back of the estate—a place where Julian had spent his childhood, hiding from the suffocating expectations of the main house. It was here that he finally learned the secret Mia had kept hidden.

"I'm pregnant, Julian," she said one evening, the words slipping out as they sat by a small, crackling fire.

The silence that followed was heavy with realization. Julian felt a surge of emotions—fear, joy, and a protective instinct so primal it took his breath away. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you use that against them?"

"Because it wasn't a weapon," Mia replied, looking into the flames. "It was the only thing in my life that felt like it belonged to me. I didn't want it to be another bargaining chip in your mother's game."

Julian pulled her into his arms, his resolve hardening into iron. "They will never touch you. They will never touch our child."

But as he spoke, he saw a black sedan creeping up the private drive through the window. It wasn't the police; it was Beatrice’s father, a man known for ruthless corporate takeovers. He wasn't here to talk; he was here to finish what Beatrice had started. Julian realized then that his mother’s threats weren't just talk—they were an active, coordinated attack.
