Chapter 4 : The Checkmate

Chapter 4 : The Checkmate
The trap sprang with devastating precision.
Less than forty-eight hours after Victor Vance attempted his cyber-heist, federal agents raided his corporate headquarters. The tracking algorithm Isabella’s team had planted not only exposed his illegal attempt to steal Vanguard data but also unraveled a massive, decade-long money-laundering operation Victor had been running for international syndicates.

The news broke on every major network. Victor Vance was arrested on the tarmac of JFK airport, attempting to flee the country.
When the FBI interrogated Victor, he immediately struck a plea deal, handing over the security footage of his meeting with Marcus Sterling in the parking garage. Marcus had not only violated his parole conditions by consorting with a known felon, but he had also committed corporate espionage and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
The authorities found Marcus the next morning. He was sitting on a park bench in the freezing rain, wearing a tattered coat, staring blankly at the ducks in the pond. He didn't run. He didn't fight. When the officers placed the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists, he simply closed his eyes, the final spark of his arrogance permanently extinguished.
Beatrice was found an hour later, wandering aimlessly near a soup kitchen. Due to her deteriorating mental and physical state, the state mandated her transfer to a heavily monitored, low-income psychiatric facility. There were no silk sheets, no caviar, and no servants to abuse. She was entirely at the mercy of the system she had spent her life defunding and mocking.
That afternoon, Isabella stood in the grand foyer of the Havenwood Estate, watching the breaking news on a sleek monitor. Clara stood beside her, holding a cup of chamomile tea.
"The district attorney is moving for maximum sentencing," Clara reported softly. "Given his previous embezzlement charges and this new conspiracy count, Marcus is facing thirty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole."
Isabella took the tea, her expression serene. "He built his own prison, Clara. Brick by brick, lie by lie. I merely locked the door."

"Are you going to attend the trial, ma'am?"
Isabella looked out the window, watching a group of women from the sanctuary laughing as they planted flowers in the garden. "Only to deliver my victim impact statement. The world needs to know that Vanguard wasn't built on vengeance. It was built on survival. And after that... I am never uttering his name again."
