Chapter 5 : The Scales of Justice

Chapter 5 : The Scales of Justice
The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. The air hummed with the electric tension of a hundred reporters, high-profile attorneys, and curious onlookers.

Marcus Sterling sat at the defense table, wearing an ill-fitting, bright orange county jumpsuit. He looked hollowed out, aging twenty years in the span of a few months. He kept his eyes glued to the scuffed wooden table, completely unable to look at the gallery.
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the courtroom opened, and a profound silence fell over the room.
Isabella walked down the center aisle. She didn't wear the intimidating crimson of her corporate victories. Instead, she wore a soft, elegant cream-colored suit. She looked radiant, peaceful, and entirely untouchable. She took her seat in the witness stand, raising her right hand to swear the oath.
The prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman with a commanding presence, approached the stand. "Ms. Vanguard. Can you describe the nature of your marriage to the defendant?"
Isabella looked directly at Marcus. For a brief second, he raised his head, his eyes pleading silently for a mercy he never earned.
"My marriage was a masterclass in psychological warfare," Isabella began, her voice steady, clear, and echoing with absolute undeniable truth. "Marcus Sterling used his wealth not to build, but to control. He isolated me, belittled me, and ultimately, resorted to physical violence when he realized he could not break my spirit."
The courtroom was dead silent. Every word she spoke was a hammer striking the final nails into his coffin.
"But I am not here today to speak of my pain," Isabella continued, turning her gaze to the judge. "I am here to ensure that this man can never use his power to shatter another human being. The corporate fraud, the embezzlement, the espionage... they are all symptoms of a man who believed he was a god among insects. I submit to the court that true justice requires his permanent removal from the society he so violently exploited."
When Isabella stepped down from the stand, the verdict was already written in the heavy silence of the room.
Two hours later, the jury returned. Guilty on all counts.

The judge’s gavel slammed down with a resounding crack. "Marcus Sterling, I sentence you to thirty-five years in federal prison. May God have mercy on your soul, because this court certainly will not."
As the bailiffs hauled Marcus away, he looked back over his shoulder one last time. Isabella was already walking out the doors, surrounded by her protective detail. She didn't look back. She was entirely free.
