Chapter 4: Cracks in the Empire

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel atrium of Bennett Tower was packed with journalists, news crews, and high-profile investors. Flashbulbs went off continuously as Ethan Bennett walked onto the raised stage, wearing a fresh tailored navy suit that completely hid the scratches on his wrists from the previous night.

Beside him stood his bride, Vanessa, looking elegant in a white silk dress, and his parents, Richard and Margaret.

Ethan stepped up to the podium, offering his signature charismatic smile to the flashing cameras.

"Thank you, everyone," Ethan began, his voice smooth and confident. "Before we discuss the historic Riverside Development Project, I want to briefly address a minor personal matter regarding last night’s celebration. A family event experienced a small, unfortunate distraction caused by my sister’s ongoing personal struggles. We love Claire deeply, and we are ensuring she receives the medical and psychological support she needs during this difficult time."

A reporter from the Chicago Tribune raised her hand. "Mr. Bennett! Reports are circulating on social media that your niece was hospitalized with a head injury! Is it true that police were called to the scene?"

Ethan’s smile remained fixed, though his knuckles turned white against the edges of the podium. "Social media is often filled with exaggerated rumors. It was a minor slip-and-fall. My niece is resting comfortably, and our family is handling the matter with privacy and love."

"Then perhaps you can explain this, Mr. Bennett!" a powerful voice echoed from the back of the atrium.

The crowd of journalists turned in unison.

Claire walked down the central marble aisle. She was dressed in a sharp, dark-green blazer, her hair pulled back neatly. Beside her walked Marcus Vance, carrying a stack of legal documents.

Gasps filled the room. The flashbulbs doubled in intensity as reporters recognized the woman at the center of the morning's gossip.

Richard Bennett’s face darkened instantly. He stepped toward the microphone, his voice sharp. "Security, escort these people out of the building immediately. This is a private corporate event."

"Not anymore, Richard," Marcus Vance declared, stepping up to the stage stairs and holding up a legal summons stamped by the Cook County Circuit Court. "I am serving Ethan Bennett, Richard Bennett, and the Bennett Development Group with a civil lawsuit for aggravated assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and evidence tampering."

The atrium erupted into chaos. Reporters shouted questions, pushing their microphones forward.

"Is this true?!"

"Mr. Vance, what evidence do you have?!"

Marcus turned toward the media cameras, his voice cutting through the noise with practiced authority. "Less than two hours ago, the Honorable Judge Katherine Harris signed an emergency subpoena ordering the Hawthorne Grand Hotel to release all cloud-stored surveillance footage from last night’s ballroom."

Ethan’s face went completely red. He took a half-step back, looking frantically toward his father.

"And furthermore," Marcus continued, pulling a document from his folder, "we have filed a formal motion with the State Attorney’s Office requesting criminal charges against Ethan Bennett for the physical assault of an eight-year-old child."

Claire stepped forward, standing directly in front of the bank of news cameras. Her voice did not tremble.

"My brother lied to you all today," Claire said, looking straight into the lenses. "My daughter did not slip and fall. Ethan planted a stolen watch in an eight-year-old girl’s purse to stage a scene, and when I exposed his lie, he struck my daughter with a solid oak board. The Bennett family tried to pay the hotel to delete the evidence. They cared more about their stock prices than a child bleeding on the floor."

Vanessa covered her face and hurried off the stage toward the executive elevators. Margaret Bennett stood frozen, her eyes wide with fury and humiliation as every news camera in Chicago captured her downfall in real time.

Richard Bennett leaned into the podium microphone, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Claire... you have officially destroyed your place in this family."

May you like

Claire met her father’s gaze without a single shred of fear left in her soul.

"You destroyed it years ago, Father," Claire replied coolly. "I’m just here to clean up the trash."
