Chapter 5: The Weapon of Truth

Chapter 5: The Weapon of Truth

The public fallout from the press conference was instantaneous and devastating. By noon, video clips of Claire confronting her family at Bennett Tower had gone viral across every major social media platform. The hashtag #JusticeForLily climbed to the top of national trending lists, accumulating millions of views within hours.
At the headquarters of Vance & Associates, Claire sat in Marcus’s glass-walled office, reviewing a stack of financial records that Marcus’s investigative team had compiled over the past twelve hours.
"The public outcry is working," Marcus said, placing a steaming cup of coffee in front of her. "Three major anchor tenants for Ethan’s Riverside project have already pulled their funding letters. The Bennett Development Group's stock dropped fourteen percent at the market close today."
Claire looked at the financial charts, but her mind was elsewhere. "How is Lily doing at your house?"
"My wife, Sarah, is taking great care of her," Marcus reassured her with a gentle smile. "She’s watching cartoons with our daughter in the garden. She’s safe, Claire. The court granted our emergency temporary restraining order. Ethan and your parents cannot come within five hundred feet of either of you."
Before Claire could answer, Marcus’s assistant knocked on the door and stepped inside. "Mr. Vance, we have an unexpected visitor in the lobby. She insists on speaking with Mrs. Bennett personally."
Marcus frowned. "Is it Margaret?"
"No," the assistant replied. "It’s Vanessa Sterling-Bennett. Ethan’s bride."
Claire exchanged a quick glance with Marcus. "Bring her in."
A moment later, Vanessa entered the office. She had traded her elaborate bridal attire for a simple trench coat and dark sunglasses. Her face was pale, and her eyes were red from crying. She looked nothing like the arrogant woman who had stood beside Ethan at the altar the night before.
"Claire..." Vanessa began, her voice barely above a whisper. She closed the door behind her and stood nervously near the edge of the desk.
"Why are you here, Vanessa?" Claire asked calmly, remaining seated. "Did Ethan send you to offer a settlement?"
"No!" Vanessa said quickly, shaking her head frantically. "Ethan doesn't know I’m here. If he knew... he would lose his mind."
Vanessa reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, placing it on the glass table between them.

"What is that?" Marcus asked, leaning forward.
"It’s the internal accounting logs for Bennett Development’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands," Vanessa revealed, her hand trembling. "Ethan forced me to sign a prenuptial agreement three days before the wedding. While my lawyers were reviewing his financial disclosures, they discovered that Ethan has been systematically embezzling funds from the family’s public construction projects to cover massive illegal gambling debts in Macau."
Claire’s eyes widened. "Gambling debts?"
"Over twelve million dollars," Vanessa said, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "The watch he claimed was stolen last night... it wasn't stolen. He had already pledged that exact limited-edition watch to a private debt collector in Chicago as collateral. He staged the whole theft at the wedding so he could file an insurance claim for two hundred thousand dollars in cash to cover an overdue payment!"
Marcus picked up the flash drive, his eyes gleaming with sharp tactical focus. "He framed an eight-year-old girl for theft just to commit insurance fraud?"
"Yes," Vanessa sobbed, covering her face. "He knew Claire wouldn't be able to defend herself against the family's influence. He thought everyone would just blame the poor sister and move on! But when Claire stood up to him, he panicked and lost control."

Vanessa looked at Claire, her eyes filled with genuine remorse. "I was blind, Claire. I thought marrying Ethan meant security and prestige. But last night... when I saw him strike your little girl without a single moment of hesitation, I realized I was marrying a monster. Please... take this drive. Stop him before he destroys anyone else."
Claire looked at the silver drive resting on the table. The web of lies Ethan had woven for decades was finally unraveling, strand by strand.
