Chapter 2 : The Descent of Shadows

Mark didn't just run; he moved with the frantic, uncoordinated desperation of a man who realized his entire reality was collapsing. The side gate groaned as he shoved it open, but he didn't get far. The screech of tires on the pavement forced him to skid to a halt. Two patrol cars slammed into the curb, blocking the driveway. Officers poured out, weapons drawn, their voices a synchronized roar of commands.

Sarah didn't look at Mark. She kept her focus entirely on Marilyn. The trauma in her patient’s eyes was deepening, turning from shock into a haunting, hollow resignation. Marilyn wasn't looking at the chaos of the arrest; she was staring at the empty space where her husband had been just moments ago, her hand resting over her abdomen.

"Marilyn, talk to me," Sarah urged, her fingers checking the pulse at the woman’s wrist. It was thready, weak. "The baby—are you feeling movement?"

Marilyn’s voice was a ghost of a sound. "It’s gone, isn't it? The life he was so afraid of… it’s slipping away."

"Don't say that," Sarah insisted, though her medical training was screaming the grim possibilities. She signaled to the ambulance now pulling onto the lawn. As the team swarmed them, Sarah felt a surge of protectiveness. She had spent years responding to calls, but this—the calculated malice behind a husband’s eyes—felt different. It wasn't just a medical emergency; it was a crusade for the truth.

As they lifted the stretcher, Sarah caught a final glimpse of Mark. He was in handcuffs, his face pressed against the hood of a cruiser. He wasn't crying; he was staring at Sarah with a look of pure, unadulterated venom, as if she were the only thing that had robbed him of his perfect, curated life.
