Chapter 3 : The Walls Close In

The hospital was a sanctuary of sterile light and controlled chaos. Marilyn was rushed into surgery, and Sarah found herself detained in a small, windowless office by a detective named Miller. He was a man who smelled of burnt coffee and cynicism.

"He’s claiming she tripped," Miller said, dropping a file on the table. "He says it was a tragic accident, and he was running because he was panicked, not guilty. We need something solid, Sarah. A witness, a recording, anything."

Sarah’s mind flashed to the scene on the lawn. She remembered the specific, sickening crunch of the fall, and the way Mark had stood on the balcony, not rushing to help, but observing. "He wasn't panicked when he was on that balcony, Detective. He was calculating. He stayed up there until the moment he realized he couldn't control the narrative. And the things she said—she knew he didn't want this child."

"That’s motive, not evidence," Miller sighed.

"Check his phone," Sarah countered, her voice hardening. "If he planned this, there’s a digital trail. He’s the type who needs to control everything, right down to the last detail. He didn't just push her; he was waiting for the right moment."

Sarah left the station feeling the weight of the injustice. She drove to the hospital, determined to be the anchor Marilyn needed. When she walked into the recovery room, the silence was heavy. Marilyn was awake, her face bruised and pale, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. She didn't look at the door until Sarah spoke.

"He’s going to try to walk away from this, Marilyn," Sarah said softly, pulling up a chair. "But you’re the truth. And we’re going to make sure the truth holds up."
