CHAPTER 4 : THE VACUUM OF POWER

CHAPTER 4 : THE VACUUM OF POWER

Two weeks later, the sprawling metropolis was holding its collective breath. The sudden, absolute disappearance of Madam Eleanor and her son had sent violent shockwaves through the city’s complex underworld. A massive vacuum of power had opened overnight, and the lesser wolves were already circling, eager to claim the scraps.

They didn't realize there were no scraps left. The Volkov Syndicate had already swallowed the plate.

Inside the grand library of the Volkov estate, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating walls lined with thousands of leather-bound books. Maya stood by the massive oak desk, examining a sprawling architectural blueprint of the city’s shipping district.

She wore a high-collared, long-sleeved black silk blouse that carefully concealed the heavy bandages wrapped tightly around her torso. The pain had subsided to a dull, persistent ache, managed by sheer willpower and a fierce determination to solidify her family's absolute dominance.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Elias strode into the room, followed closely by his chief lieutenant, Viktor—a towering man with a scarred face and unquestionable loyalty.

"The Rossi family is testing the perimeter," Elias announced, sitting down in the high-backed leather chair behind the desk. He laced his fingers together, his icy eyes narrowing. "Don Rossi sent three of his capos to the southern docks this morning. They attempted to extort the dockworkers, claiming that since Eleanor is gone, the territory defaults to them."

Maya didn't flinch. She traced a slender finger along the blueprint, stopping at the exact location of the southern docks. "And what did our men do?"

"Nothing, per your strict instructions," Viktor grunted, crossing his massive arms. "We observed. The Rossi capos roughed up a few foremen, made their threats, and left. But with all due respect, Maya, if we do not respond with immediate, overwhelming violence, the city will think the Volkovs are weak. They will think Elias is distracted by your recovery."

Maya slowly rolled up the blueprint, her face a mask of terrifying, calculated intelligence. "Violence is loud, Viktor. It draws federal attention, it causes collateral damage, and frankly, it is incredibly unimaginative. Eleanor ruled with cheap violence, and look where she is now."

Elias watched his niece with a faint glimmer of pride in his eyes. "What is your counter-move, little wolf?"

"Don Rossi is a creature of immense pride and crippling debt," Maya explained smoothly, walking toward the center of the room. "He relies on his underground casinos and illegal sports betting to keep his family afloat. The extortion money from the docks was supposed to cover a massive loan he took out from a private Swiss bank."

"A bank that, coincidentally, the Volkov Syndicate acquired a controlling interest in three days ago," Elias finished, a dark, predatory smile finally breaking across his face.

"Exactly," Maya nodded. "We don't need to send armed men to the docks, Viktor. We are going to bleed the Rossi family completely dry without firing a single bullet. I want a meeting arranged with Don Rossi’s son, Carlo, this afternoon. Neutral ground."

Viktor frowned, clearly uneasy. "Maya, you are still healing. You shouldn't be exposing yourself to a sit-down with the Rossis."

"I am the heir to this syndicate," Maya stated, her voice dropping into a cold, authoritative cadence that perfectly mirrored her uncle's. "If they think I am weak, I will look them in the eye and show them exactly who orchestrated Eleanor's demise. Set the meeting."

Four hours later, the private VIP room of the city’s most exclusive, neutral-ground restaurant was suffocatingly tense. Carlo Rossi, a brash, arrogant man in his late twenties wearing a flashy designer suit, sat flanked by two hulking bodyguards. He sneered as the doors opened.

He expected Elias Volkov. Instead, Maya walked in.

She moved with absolute grace, her high heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. Two Volkov operatives stood silently by the door as she took a seat directly across from Carlo. She didn't order a drink. She simply stared at him with those terrifying, dead eyes.

"They sent the little girl to do a man's job?" Carlo laughed, leaning back in his chair and lighting an expensive cigar. "I heard Eleanor gave you a nice little beating before she disappeared. Tell Elias that the southern docks belong to the Rossi family now. Consider it a tax for us allowing you to operate in our city."

Maya didn't blink. She reached into her designer handbag, pulled out a sleek black tablet, and slid it across the table.

"What is this?" Carlo scoffed, ignoring the device.

"That is a live feed of your family's primary underground casino," Maya said softly, her voice slicing through his arrogance like a razor blade. "And the second screen is the digital ledger of the Swiss bank your father owes forty million dollars to."

Carlo frowned, picking up the tablet. His arrogant smirk vanished instantly.

On the screen, heavily armed federal agents were raiding the casino, confiscating millions in cash and arresting his top lieutenants. On the second screen, the bank ledger showed a sudden, immediate foreclosure on all Rossi family assets due to a "breach of contract."

"You touched our docks this morning, Carlo," Maya whispered, leaning slightly forward. "In response, I just erased your family's entire financial foundation. You are completely bankrupt. The feds have your money, and the bank has your properties. You have nothing."

Carlo jumped to his feet, his face red with primal rage, reaching for the weapon inside his jacket. "You bitch!"

Before his hand could even grasp the grip of his pistol, Maya’s operatives had their suppressed weapons aimed directly at the center of his forehead. But Maya merely raised a hand, waving her men down.

"Sit down, Carlo," Maya commanded, her voice echoing with undeniable, terrifying authority. "If you draw that weapon, you will die before it clears your holster. And your father will spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."

Carlo slowly, shaking with fury and terror, sank back into his chair.

"The southern docks belong to the Volkovs," Maya stated, standing up and smoothing her black silk blouse. "This city belongs to the Volkovs. Tell your father that if one of your men even steps foot near our territory again, I won't just take your money. I will take your bloodline. Do we understand each other?"

Carlo couldn't speak. He just nodded, completely broken by a girl half his age. Maya turned and walked out of the room, leaving the remnants of the Rossi pride shattered on the floor.
