By the following autumn, Oakhaven Springs was thriving like never before. The county historical board officially named the valley a heritage protection zone, permanently banning industrial waste development and predatory corporate buyouts.
In the center of town, a celebration was held to honor Clara Montgomery, who had been elected president of the Oakhaven Historical and Environmental Society.
The town square was decorated with golden sunflowers, white ribbons, and outdoor tables loaded with homemade pies, roasted corn, and fresh bread.
Richard stood beside Clara, looking proud in his best Sunday suit, his arm wrapped firmly around his wife’s waist.
Sitting together at a picnic table were Julian and Audrey. They were not husband and wife—that marriage had been legally annulled long ago with peace and mutual agreement—but they were friends, bound by a shared journey of healing, redemption, and deep respect for the land they both protected.
George Montgomery remained in state prison, forgotten by the corporate world he had tried so hard to conquer, while the family he had tried to destroy stood united under the mountain sun.
A young reporter from the Richmond Daily news walked up to Clara with a notebook.
"Mrs. Montgomery," the reporter asked, holding out a microphone. "Two years ago, your family faced a scandal that nearly destroyed your home and your son’s future. How did you find the courage to stand against your own family’s greed?"
