CHAPTER 6 : THE FRAGILE ALLIANCE

CHAPTER 6 : THE FRAGILE ALLIANCE

As the public tide turned in their favor, the internal pressure mounted. The company was in the middle of a massive audit, and while Elena and Evelyn had the backing of the board, there were still those who remained loyal to Arthur’s old guard. They were the men who had benefited from his corruption, the ones who feared that if Elena succeeded, their own secrets would be uncovered.

One afternoon, a senior executive, Mr. Henderson, approached Elena in her office. His smile was thin, his eyes guarded. "You’re doing a great job, Mrs. Sterling. Really, it’s refreshing. But perhaps you should reconsider some of these... aggressive audits? They’re making our long-term partners nervous."

Elena knew exactly what he was doing. Henderson had been Arthur’s right-hand man, the one who handled the bribes.

"I’m not interested in their comfort, Mr. Henderson," she replied, not looking up from her desk. "I’m interested in the truth. If our partners are nervous, it’s because they have something to hide. Are you suggesting that you have something to hide as well?"

Henderson’s face tightened. "I’m just suggesting that things have always been done a certain way here. It might be wise to respect the status quo."

"The status quo is what caused the collapse," Elena retorted, finally looking up. "And I have no intention of respecting it. You have forty-eight hours to provide full disclosure on your department’s transactions, or I’ll hand everything we have over to the authorities. No more games."

He left her office looking as if he’d been slapped.

Elena leaned back in her chair, her heart pounding. She knew she was putting a target on her back. Arthur was likely working with people like Henderson, trying to sabotage her from the inside. But she felt a sense of freedom she had never known. She wasn't just surviving; she was thriving.

That night, she sat with Evelyn and Beatrice on the terrace. The air was cool, the city lights shimmering below them like a carpet of diamonds.

"You’re playing a dangerous game," Beatrice said softly, swirling her tea.

"I know," Elena replied. "But what other choice do I have? If I pull back now, they’ll just destroy me anyway. The only way to win is to keep moving forward."

Evelyn smiled, a genuine expression of pride that made Elena’s chest ache. "You’ve become a formidable leader, Elena. Arthur never understood that he wasn't keeping a pet; he was grooming a successor."

But the alliance was fragile. Evelyn still struggled to let go of her own grip on power, and there were moments when the old ways of the family threatened to bleed into the new. They had to constantly remind themselves that they were working together for a common goal, not competing for control.

Suddenly, a notification pinged on Elena’s phone. It was an anonymous tip—a photo of Arthur meeting with a group of investors who were known for their aggressive, unethical tactics. He wasn't just sulking; he was planning a comeback.
