Chapter 3: The Fractured Reflection

The storm outside mirrored the chaos blooming within Clara’s mind. As Maria retreated into the shadows of the hallway, the silence in the library felt like a physical weight pressing against Clara’s chest. Her mother, Eleanor, stood by the window, a silhouette of iron and poise.

"You speak in riddles, Mother," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "You talk about mirrors and consequences while my son lies asleep in his nursery, potentially in danger. What is she to you? And why are you protecting her?"

Eleanor turned slowly. The soft amber light of the lamp cast long shadows across her face, highlighting the lines of a life lived in carefully curated deceit. "You think you know the history of this family, Clara. You think this house is built on a foundation of wealth and virtue. It is not. It is built on a foundation of silence—a silence I purchased with the price of a soul."

Eleanor walked to a mahogany desk and unlocked a hidden drawer. She pulled out a yellowed envelope. "Maria isn’t just a housekeeper. She is the daughter of the woman I was before I became the wife of your father. She is the child I was forced to leave behind so that I could marry into this bloodline. You and she… you are sisters."

Clara staggered back, hitting the velvet armchair. The world spun. The "heinous act" Maria had been accused of—the spilled milk, the perceived threat to the child—was merely the catalyst. The true threat was the truth itself. Clara realized that every time she had looked down on Maria, she had been looking at a mirror of her own discarded humanity.

"Why now?" Clara asked, tears streaming down her face.

"Because the past is a hungry ghost," Eleanor said, her voice cracking for the first time. "And it is finally time to feed it the truth."
