Chapter 5: The Breaking Point

Chapter 5: The Breaking Point
The tension hit a fever pitch during the Founders' Gala, an annual event the family hosted to maintain appearances. The ballroom was filled with the elite, all while Clara and Maria were in the library, desperately trying to find the one document that would prove Eleanor’s innocence against a frame-up by their own business partners.

"They are going to strip us of everything," Clara realized, looking at the spreadsheet of debts. "Not just the money. They want the name. They want the legacy."
"Let them take it," Maria said, surprising her. "The legacy is a cage, Clara. Look at Mother. She has spent forty years guarding a pile of gold while her heart withered. Do you want that for yourself? Do you want your son to grow up in a cage of silk and lies?"
Clara looked at the portrait of her father hanging above the mantle. It was a cold, demanding image. She realized then that she didn't want to be the woman in the portrait. She didn't want to be the "perfect" daughter.
The climax arrived when the CEO of their father’s firm, Mr. Sterling, entered the room, his smile predatory. He demanded the final signature on the property transfer. Eleanor stood by the door, defeated, her hands shaking.

Clara walked forward, took the pen from Sterling’s hand, and snapped it in two. The room went dead silent. The music stopped. Every eye in the ballroom turned toward them.
"We aren't signing," Clara said, her voice steady and echoing throughout the vast room. "We aren't playing your game anymore. We have the proof of your embezzlement, Sterling. And we are going to the authorities."
