Chapter 4 : A New Charter

Three months later, the early autumn wind swept through the historic courtyards of St. Jude Academy, carrying the crisp scent of turning leaves and sea salt from the coast.

The campus had changed. The towering bronze statue of Harold Vane that once stood at the entrance of the western wing was gone, replaced by a flawless marble monument dedicated to global scientific research.

Inside the dining hall, the atmosphere was no longer defined by the suffocating, silent segregation of wealth. The long oak tables were packed with a diverse, vibrant mix of students—legacy heirs and brilliant scholarship minds sitting side by side, engaged in rapid, uninhibited debates over economics, literature, and art.

Seraphina Vance stood by the grand arched windows, wearing a fresh, unmarked school uniform. Her posture was relaxed, a genuine smile replacing the cold authority she had been forced to wield three months prior.

Marcus stood three paces behind her, his vigilant eyes scanning the courtyard, his hands clasped behind his back.

"The restructuring of the academic endowment is finalized, Miss Seraphina," Marcus reported quietly. "The new scholarship tier has successfully integrated forty-two new students from the regional public sectors. The academy’s aggregate testing scores have already risen by twelve percent."

"And Beatrice?" Seraphina asked, watching a group of freshmen laugh as they crossed the quad below.

"Her family relocated to a modest residential sector in Ohio following the insolvency hearings," Marcus replied, a faint, razor-thin smirk touching his lips. "She is currently attending a public district school. The dress code requires standard canvas sneakers, and I understand she is currently on the waitlist for a cafeteria job to cover her extracurricular fees."

Seraphina turned away from the window, her hazel eyes bright with a profound, quiet peace. She picked up her notebook, ready to head to her afternoon seminar.

"Good," Seraphina said softly, walking toward the heavy wooden doors. "Let her learn how to clean the table before she decides who is allowed to sit at it."
