Chapter 2 : The Shadow in the Rain

Chapter 2 : The Shadow in the Rain
The night air didn't just smell of rain; it smelled of reckoning. Julian didn't look back at the mansion. He knew if he saw that cold, elegant woman standing in the doorway—the woman who had raised him, fed him, and apparently butchered his peace of mind—he would break. Instead, he ran. His polished dress shoes slipped on the slick marble of the driveway, his lungs burning as he sprinted toward the gated perimeter of the estate.

He heard it before he saw it: the crunch of gravel. Someone—or something—was trailing him. The shadow. His mother’s "management" team didn’t waste time. Julian dove into the thick hedgerows bordering the estate, his expensive suit tearing against thorns. He wasn't a soldier; he was a boy who had spent his life in boarding schools and private clubs, but fear, he discovered, was a rapid teacher.
He reached the perimeter fence, an iron monolith that had always signified safety. Now, it was a trap. He scrambled over, dropping onto the muddy embankment of the service road outside. His phone buzzed in his pocket—a burner he had kept for secret communications with friends. A message from an unknown number: “Zurich is already waiting. You have nowhere to go.”

Julian felt the adrenaline sour into cold dread. He didn't have money, he didn't have his identification, and he didn't have an ally in the world. He reached the edge of the woods and saw the lights of a passing truck. He flagged it down, his mind racing. He needed a place to hide, and he knew only one person who wasn't part of his mother’s world: Elena, a girl he had pushed away years ago because she "wasn't the right fit" for his status.
As the truck roared away, leaving him in the middle of a desolate highway, he realized he wasn't just running from his mother. He was running from the boy he used to be. Every mile that took him away from the mansion felt like an exorcism. He didn't know if he could trust Elena, but he knew he couldn't trust the silence of the night. He vanished into the dark, a phantom searching for a truth that could either save him or finish the job his mother had started.
