Chapter 4: The Public Facade

Arthur’s retaliation was not physical; it was systemic. By noon, the first headlines hit: 'Vance Family Estrangement: Wife Accused of Embezzlement.' Arthur had gone to the press, spinning a narrative that painted Clara as a gold-digger who had stolen corporate assets and turned his own mother against him.

The phones in the mansion began to ring incessantly. Reporters, business rivals, and opportunistic socialites circled like vultures.

"He’s playing his best card," Eleanor remarked, watching the news ticker from her phone. She looked entirely unmoved. "He knows that in our world, perception is reality. If he makes the public believe you are the villain, he can legally freeze the assets we need to rebuild."

Clara watched the screen, her pulse racing as she saw a doctored image of herself—a photo taken at an event where she had been visibly distressed—being used to support Arthur’s lies. She felt a wave of nausea, the familiar urge to hide and apologize.

"Do not look away," Beatrice commanded, her voice cutting through the panic. She walked over and turned the television toward Clara. "Look at it. Own it. He wants you to crumble so he can sweep in and 'rescue' you. If you show fear, he wins. If you show the truth, he burns."

Clara took a deep breath, grounding herself. She realized that Arthur’s power had always relied on her silence. She looked at Eleanor and Beatrice. "Call the press," Clara said, her voice steady. "But not his contacts. Call the investigative journalists he’s spent years trying to bury. We aren't going to defend ourselves. We’re going to go on the offensive."
