Chapter 2: The Shadows of Truth

The heavy oak door slammed shut, cutting off the howling wind and rain, but the storm inside the house was far from over.

Ethan held his trembling daughter, Lily, tightly against his chest, his heart breaking as her tears soaked through his suit jacket.

"She’s gone, Daddy," Lily whispered, her voice cracking with a terrifying realization. "But she said she’s coming back for the rest."

Ethan stiffened, a cold dread washing over him as he stared at the birthday cake melting on the floor.

The woman who just left wasn't just a cruel stepmother; she was a ghost from his wife's hidden past.

"What did she mean by 'the rest', Lily?" Ethan asked, lifting her chin gently, trying to mask his panic.

"She wanted Mom's diary," Lily sobbed, pointing a shaking finger toward the dark, narrow hallway upstairs.

Suddenly, a violent crash echoed from above, followed by the slow, deliberate sound of footsteps heavy with intent.

Ethan’s breath hitched; he realized the front door had been a distraction, and someone else was already inside.

Pushing Lily behind the kitchen counter, he grabbed a heavy silver candle holder, his knuckles turning white.

"Stay here, don't make a sound," he whispered, his eyes locked on the staircase shrouded in darkness.

The footsteps stopped at the top of the stairs, and a low, mocking chuckle drifted down through the cold air.

"You always were too slow, Ethan," a sharp, unfamiliar female voice purred from the shadows above.

A flash of lightning illuminated the landing, revealing a woman holding a tattered leather book—his late wife’s diary.

"Who are you? What do you want from my family?" Ethan demanded, taking a cautious step forward.

"I want what was stolen from me ten years ago," she hissed, stepping into the dim light.

Her face bore an uncanny resemblance to his late wife, sending a sickening shockwave straight through Ethan's chest.

"Elena had a twin?" Ethan breathed out, his mind racing to connect the pieces of a fractured past.

"The golden child who took everything," the woman spat, her eyes gleaming with a manic, vengeful hatred.

"She took my inheritance, my identity, and now, I’m taking back what belongs to me," she declared coldly.

Before Ethan could react, she lunged downward, not at him, but directly toward the kitchen where Lily hid.

"Lily, run!" Ethan roared, throwing himself forward to intercept the shadow before it reached his daughter.
