Chapter 3: The Broken Legacy

Chapter 3: The Broken Legacy

The collision was violent. Ethan’s shoulder slammed into the woman’s torso just as her foot hit the bottom step, the sheer force of his momentum sending them both crashing onto the hard hardwood floor of the foyer. The silver candle holder clattered away, rolling into the darkness beneath the hallway table.

"Get off me!" she shrieked, her fingers clawing viciously at Ethan’s face, leaving hot, stinging lines of red across his cheek.

Despite the blinding pain, Ethan pinned her wrists to the floor, his chest heaving as he stared down at the face that had haunted his dreams for the last three years. Up close, the resemblance to his late wife, Elena, was terrifying, but where Elena’s features had held warmth and gentle grace, this woman’s face was a sharp, twisted caricature of malice.

"Lily, lock the bathroom door! Now!" Ethan shouted over his shoulder, never breaking eye contact with the intruder.

From the kitchen, the frantic, light pitter-patter of Lily’s sneakers echoed against the tile, followed by the heavy click of a deadbolt sliding into place in the downstairs hallway. Only when he heard that sound did Ethan allow himself to breathe.

"You’re insane," Ethan hissed, tightening his grip on her wrists. "Elena’s family never mentioned a sister. She didn't have an inheritance. We built everything we have from scratch!"

The woman let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that echoed off the high ceilings of the house. "Of course she didn't tell you, Ethan! You were just the perfect, naive shielding mechanism she used to hide from the fallout. Look at the book! Look at what your precious, saintly wife did to me!"

With a sudden, explosive surge of strength, she wrenched her right hand free, throwing the tattered leather diary directly into Ethan’s face. The heavy binding struck his forehead, blinding him for a fraction of a second. In that single moment of distraction, she bucked her hips, throwing him off her, and scrambled backward against the base of the staircase.

Ethan sat up, wiping a bead of blood from his brow, his hand falling onto the open pages of the diary that lay between them. The elegant, slanting cursive was undeniably Elena’s, but as his eyes scanned the frantic, ink-stained entries, the world began to tilt.

May 14th, 2016. The doctors say Veronica's psychological treatment isn't working. She took the trust fund documents from Father's safe. If the authorities find out what she did in Paris, the family name is ruined. I had no choice. I signed the institutionalization papers using her name. I took the remaining funds and fled to Ohio. I had to become her to save what was left. If anyone finds me, if Veronica ever wakes up from the sedation...

Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat. His entire three-year marriage—the quiet life they had built, the soft-spoken woman who had tucked their daughter into bed—was built on the architecture of a brilliant, desperate identity theft.

"She didn't just take the money, Ethan," Veronica whispered, her voice dropping into a low, venomous purr as she pulled a small, silver lighter from her pocket. "She took my freedom. She left me in that private clinic in France under her name while she lived the American dream with a handsome architect and a beautiful little girl. For ten years, I was pumped full of antipsychotics meant for Elena."

She struck the wheel of the lighter. A small, dancing yellow flame illuminated the manic, hollow depths of her eyes.

"But the clinic closed its doors last month, Ethan. The records were leaked. And now, the golden child is dead, and there is nobody left to pay the price but the things she loved most."
