Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of a Vendetta

The hospital waiting room was a study in sterile indifference. David sat on a hard, plastic chair, his tuxedo jacket stained with the dark, dried evidence of the night’s carnage. He didn't look like a man of status anymore; he looked like a man who had stared into the abyss and realized the abyss was currently undergoing emergency surgery.

The detective, a weathered man named Miller, approached him with a heavy folder. "The surveillance footage, Mr. Vance," he said, his voice devoid of the usual performative empathy. "We’ve analyzed the entry points. The security system wasn't hacked from the outside; it was bypassed with an administrative override. Someone with intimate knowledge of your home’s security architecture—a password, a biometric bypass—let her in."

David felt a cold, crystalline clarity wash over him. The "woman in crimson" wasn't a random intruder. She was someone they had trusted. The betrayal felt less like a knife and more like a systemic collapse. He thought of his inner circle, the people who had access to the master server, the people who had toasted to his and Elena's future only a week prior.

"Find her," David said, his voice sounding foreign to his own ears—hollow, resonant, and utterly devoid of mercy. "And don't bother with the arrest warrant. Tell me where she is, and I’ll handle the rest."

Miller’s gaze sharpened. "That’s not how this works, David. If you go rogue, you become just as liable as she is."

"I don't care about liability," David retorted, standing up. He was a man who had built an empire by anticipating the moves of his rivals. He realized now that he had been playing a game of chess while someone else had been playing a game of war. He walked out of the hospital, leaving behind the man he had been—the husband, the philanthropist, the pillar of the community. In the back of his mind, the rhythmic, persistent sound of Elena’s heartbeat kept him tethered to reality, but his soul had already hardened into a weapon.
