Chapter 3 : The Silent Reconnaissance

David spent the next three days in the shadows. He didn't go home; he went to the periphery. He leveraged every contact, every backroom favor, and every piece of hidden leverage he had accumulated in his rise to power. He found that the woman in crimson was Julianna, a former partner in their investment firm whom he had ousted years ago for "accounting irregularities." She hadn't just been angry; she had been meticulously planning her retaliation.

He traced her to a warehouse on the outskirts of the city, a place that reeked of rust and secrets. He didn't call the police. He approached it with the quiet, predatory grace of a man who had nothing left to lose. He knew she would be expecting him to follow the law, to follow the procedural path of justice. But David had learned that in the world of the elite, justice was a luxury. Retribution was a necessity.

He found Julianna in a makeshift office, surrounded by screens displaying the feed from his own home. She was watching the room where Elena had nearly died, a glass of wine in her hand, her posture one of absolute, unearned victory.

"You were always so predictable, David," she said, not even turning around as he stepped into the light. "You thought that by building a house of glass, you were creating a legacy. You didn't realize that glass is the easiest thing to shatter."

David didn't speak. He stepped forward, his eyes scanning the room. He saw the files, the evidence of her manipulation, the proof that she had been poisoning the environment of their marriage for months, planting seeds of doubt and paranoia. She hadn't just tried to kill them; she had tried to erode their trust until they destroyed each other.

"You made a mistake," David said, his voice a low, dangerous hum. "You thought you were hurting a man. You were actually waking up a monster."
