Chapter 2: The Public Humiliation

Sarah didn't just want Margaret in the back; she wanted her invisible. As the guests began to fill the ballroom, Sarah signaled to a security guard with a sharp, imperious nod. The guard approached Margaret, his face void of empathy. "Ma'am, you need to follow me to the seating area in the rear," he said, gesturing toward the shadowed corner near the service entrance.

Margaret’s eyes searched Sarah’s for a flicker of recognition or kindness, but found only the cold, calculated distance of a woman terrified of losing her social standing. Margaret quietly complied, her flat shoes making no sound on the marble as she walked away from the light.

As she sat in the corner, she clutched the velvet box, her knuckles white. She watched Sarah laugh with David, the bride radiating a warmth that she had never shown Margaret in years. Suddenly, Sarah’s mother-in-law, a woman known for her icy demeanor, walked toward Margaret’s table. "You must be the... housekeeper?" she asked, her voice dripping with disdain.

The room seemed to hold its breath. Sarah, watching from across the aisle, didn't step in. She looked down at her champagne flute, intentionally turning her back. In that moment, the betrayal was complete. Margaret felt her heart shatter, not for herself, but for the girl she had raised who had traded her soul for a lace-covered illusion.
