The ceremony was a blur of forced smiles and expensive flowers. When it was time for the reception, the toasts began. The Whitmore family boasted about their lineage, their real estate empire, and the "perfect" match Sarah had made. Then, it was time for the bride to speak.
Sarah took the microphone, her voice steady and practiced. She began a speech about her "orphanage" background, spinning a tragic but romanticized tale of being a self-made woman who had overcome early hardship. She spoke of her "distant, passed-away relatives" who would have been so proud of her today.
Margaret sat in the shadows, listening to her own life—the sleepless nights, the hunger, the sacrifices—being erased and replaced by a lie.

Margaret pulled away, her voice suddenly strong, echoing through the silent room. "I am not ruining your life, Sarah. I am the only one who gave you one." She opened the velvet box. The sapphire brooch caught the chandelier light, casting blue reflections across the wall. "You came to me with this. You were a gift I never asked for, but I loved you more than my own life."
