Full Story : Their escape was only the beginning.

The silence in the hallway was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic, sharp panting of the Doberman that still stood guard over the fallen man. Maya clutched her abdomen, her breath hitching as the adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a cold, numbing fear. She looked up at Liam, who stood frozen at the top of the stairs, his face a mask of shock and confusion as he processed the sudden turn of events.

The aggressor, the man who had moments ago been brimming with cruel arrogance, was now crumpled at the base of the stairs, nursing a wounded arm where the dog had struck. His companion, the older man, stared down with an unreadable expression, his hands clasped behind his back as if observing a simple disagreement rather than a life-altering act of violence. The power dynamic in the house had shifted in a heartbeat, leaving everyone paralyzed.

"Liam," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner. "We need to leave. Now." She tried to push herself up against the wall, but a sharp, stabbing pain radiated from her side, forcing her to gasp and sink back down onto the hardwood floor. Tears welled in her eyes, not just from the physical ache, but from the realization that this was far from over.

Liam snapped out of his trance, his eyes locking onto hers with a mixture of desperate concern and cold resolve. He moved toward her, his movements cautious, eyes scanning the older man who still stood at the top of the landing. "I’ve got you," he said, his voice steadying. "We’re getting out of here." But as he reached for her, a low, guttural growl echoed through the hallway—the Doberman was still on high alert.

The older man finally spoke, his voice dry and devoid of emotion. "You think you can just walk away from this?" he asked, his gaze drifting from Liam to the trembling woman on the floor. "The agreement was clear, Liam. And your wife... well, she’s become a rather unpredictable variable in this entire equation." His words hung in the air, heavy with a threat that transcended the immediate physical danger.

Liam pulled Maya to her feet, supporting her weight as she leaned heavily against him. "We never signed anything," he snapped, his knuckles white as he tightened his grip on her arm. "This was never a deal. This was a nightmare you forced on us." He looked at the man on the floor, who was beginning to stir, his eyes darting wildly as he gripped his wounded limb and muttered curses under his breath.

"It wasn't a choice, son," the older man countered, stepping down one stair, the wood creaking under his weight. "It was an inheritance. And some things you simply cannot refuse, no matter how much you might want to." He gestured toward the door. "Go. Take her. But remember this: you are playing in a game where the rules are written in blood, and neither of you knows how to read them yet."

As they reached the front door, the heavy oak frame seemed to loom over them like a gate to a prison they had finally unlocked. Liam pulled the handle, the cool night air rushing in to meet them, a stark contrast to the oppressive, stifling atmosphere of the house. Maya looked back one last time; the dog had retreated into the shadows of the hallway, its yellow eyes reflecting the faint light from the porch.

They stumbled into the night, the gravel driveway crunching under their feet, the distant sound of crickets suddenly feeling like a symphony of freedom. Maya looked at Liam, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Where do we go?" she asked, her voice trembling. Liam looked toward the dark road ahead, his eyes hardening. "Anywhere but here," he replied. "But we have to be smart. This is just the beginning."
