Chapter 2: The Shadows of the Past

Chapter 2: The Shadows of the Past
The darkness of the countryside felt suffocating, but it was the only ally Liam and Maya had. As they reached the edge of the property, the silence of the woods was broken only by the frantic pounding of Maya’s heart. Liam didn't speak; he focused on the road, his mind racing through the implications of the older man’s words: “An inheritance.”
They reached their modest sedan, parked half a mile down the road. As Liam helped Maya into the passenger seat, the ambient light of the dashboard illuminated the grim reality of their situation. Maya’s side was bruised, a blossoming dark violet patch under her shirt where she had hit the floor.
"Who were they, Liam?" she whispered, her hands trembling as she tried to buckle her seatbelt.
"People I thought were ghosts," Liam replied, his voice tight. He turned the key, and the engine roared to life. "My father was involved in things he never spoke about. I thought when he died, the debts died with him. I was wrong."

As they drove, the headlights caught a flash of movement in the rearview mirror. A black SUV had pulled out of the driveway they had just fled. Liam’s jaw tightened. He didn't accelerate recklessly; he knew that would only draw attention. Instead, he took the winding backroads, utilizing the terrain he had known as a child.
"We can't go home," Maya said, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. "If they know where we live, they know everything."

"We aren't going home," Liam confirmed. "We’re going to find out exactly what this ‘inheritance’ is before they can use it to destroy us."
The drama shifted from physical confrontation to psychological survival. For hours, they drove in tense silence, the weight of their secret burden mounting. Every shadow looked like a threat, and every car that passed felt like a hunter. Maya realized that the fear wasn't just about their lives; it was about the truth Liam had been hiding. She looked at her husband—a man she thought she knew—and wondered if the man behind the wheel was a stranger.
