Chapter 3 : The Digital Ghost

Elena’s pulse thrummed, a desperate rhythm against the silence of the ballroom. She knew the security terminal was located behind the velvet curtains of the service alcove—a space she had scrubbed a thousand times. Every second was a gamble. The security guards, hulking men in suits that looked like armor, were now only three strides away.

"Step aside, Miss," the lead guard grunted, his hand resting on his radio.

Elena didn't scream or run. Instead, she performed the one move the socialite wouldn't expect: she collapsed. She feigned a dizzy spell, a classic, pathetic display of weakness that drew a collective gasp from the crowd. As she tipped forward, she purposefully knocked a heavy crystal champagne tower off the nearby table. The sound of shattering glass was deafening, a cascade of sparkling shards that created a wall of chaos between her and the guards.

Amidst the confusion, Elena scrambled toward the service alcove. Her fingers, calloused from years of manual labor, moved with the precision of a surgeon. She reached the hidden terminal. The screen was bathed in the cool, blue glow of the security feed. She didn't have much time—she could hear the guards barking orders, pushing through the stunned guests.

She bypassed the main interface, her mind racing back to the maintenance logs she had overheard the engineers discussing weeks ago. The glitch. She tapped into the system’s cache, searching for the raw data packets that preceded the loop. There it was: a ghost frame, hidden beneath the manipulated footage. She tapped 'Export to Public Cloud,' her heart stopping as the progress bar crawled across the screen.
