Chapter 4 : The Unraveling

The socialite, sensing the shift, abandoned her performance of feigned concern. She sprinted toward the alcove, her expensive heels clicking like gunfire on the marble. "Stop her!" she shrieked, the mask of the elegant lady falling away to reveal a desperate, panicked predator. "She’s tampering with the evidence!"

Elena spun around just as the guard grabbed her arm, his grip bruising. But it was too late. The progress bar hit 100%. Across the ballroom, the large projection screens—meant to display photos of the event’s gala—flickered. The socialite’s face turned from white to a sickly shade of grey.

The raw footage didn't show Elena stealing the brooch; it showed the socialite sliding the jewel into Elena’s bag while Elena was busy wiping down a wine stain, her back turned. It showed the socialite’s conspirator, a man in a waiter’s uniform, nodding in silent, scripted confirmation. The room went dead silent. The guests, formerly vultures, were now witnesses to a brutal dismantling of power.

"I didn't steal it," Elena whispered, her voice amplified by the gala’s sound system, which she had inadvertently toggled. "I just cleaned up after people who thought they were better than me."

The socialite’s social standing didn't just crack; it pulverized. The guests pulled back, the social contagion of the scandal making them desperate to distance themselves from her. Phones were raised, not to record a theft, but to document a downfall. The guards released Elena, their own expressions shifting from indifference to a wary, confused respect.
