Chapter 5: Poisoned Waters

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel sparkled with crystal chandeliers and high-society elite. Whispers spread like wildfire the moment Julian Sterling entered the hall. But the quiet murmurs turned into stunned silence when the crowd saw the woman walking beside him.

Clara glided across the polished floor with effortless composure. Her hand rested gracefully on Julian’s arm, her head held high.

Across the room, standing beside a group of wealthy board members, was Eleanor Vance, dressed in a blood-red silk gown. Standing next to her was her father, Victor Vance—a ruthless, silver-haired tycoon whose cold eyes fixed instantly on Clara.

Eleanor’s face flushed with violent rage. She broke away from her circle and marched directly toward Julian and Clara, ignoring the gasps of the surrounding high-society guests.

"How dare you!" Eleanor hissed, her voice low so as not to cause an immediate scene. "You bring this servant to the Heritage Gala? Have you completely lost your mind, Julian? You are embarrassing your family name!"

"The only embarrassment to the Sterling name was allowing you into our home, Eleanor," Julian replied coldly, his posture formidable. "And as for Clara, she belongs in this room far more than anyone who relies on fraud and slander to make their mark."

Victor Vance stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on his daughter’s shoulder. His smile was razor-sharp and devoid of warmth. "Careful, Julian," Victor warned softly. "Your grandmother’s mental instability is public knowledge now. The board meets on Monday to vote on transferring voting proxy rights to me as senior trustee. You are fighting a losing battle."

"My grandmother is mentally sharp, Victor," Julian countered smoothly. "And the toxicology reports from her recent bloodwork have been submitted directly to the State Prosecutor's Office. We know about the crushed sedatives, Victor. And we know who purchased them."

Victor’s triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting nervously toward his daughter. Eleanor’s face drained of color.

"You have no proof," Eleanor stammered, pulling back.

"We have security footage, medical records, and financial receipts," Clara chimed in, her voice calm, clear, and unwavering. "And most importantly, Mr. Vance, we have my grandmother Martha’s personal journal from thirty years ago—detailing the exact bank accounts you used to siphon money from the Sterling Foundation."

The surrounding guests, who had been listening intently to the heated exchange, began whispering rapidly among themselves. Victor Vance’s eyes burned with pure malice as he glared at Clara.

"You little pest," Victor growled quietly under his breath. "You think you've won? You don't know what I'm capable of."

"Is that a threat, Victor?" Julian stepped directly between Victor and Clara, towering over the older man. "Because if you step anywhere near Clara or my grandmother again, I won't just ruin you financially—I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison."
