Chapter 2: The Echoes of Retribution

Chapter 2: The Echoes of Retribution
The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Vance Global penthouse, casting long, golden beams across the expansive minimalist living room. While the rest of the city buzzed with gossip about the spectacular downfall of Sterling Enterprises, inside this sanctuary, life moved with a quiet, deliberate grace.

Victoria stood by the kitchen island, expertly pouring hot water over loose-leaf chamomile tea. Her white silk blouse was crisp, unblemished by the chaos of the previous evening. Footsteps padded softly against the hardwood floor, and a small pair of arms wrapped around her waist.
"Good morning, Mommy," Lily mumbled, rubbing her sleepy eyes. She was wearing a soft, cloud-white cotton dress—the first of the dozen replacements delivered yesterday.
Victoria turned, setting the kettle down, and scooped Lily up into her arms, resting the child's head against her shoulder. "Good morning, my love. Did you sleep well?"
"Uh-huh. The bad lady didn't visit my dreams," Lily replied honestly, her small fingers playing with the collar of Victoria's shirt.
Victoria's heart tightened, a fierce surge of protectiveness washing over her. "She never will, sweetheart. I promise you that."
As if on cue, the private elevator chimed softly. The heavy steel doors slid open, and Thomas, Victoria’s chief executive assistant and head of security, stepped into the foyer. He held a sleek tablet in one hand and a thick stack of morning newspapers in the other. He stopped a respectful distance away, waiting for Victoria to acknowledge him.
"Speak, Thomas," Victoria said calmly, setting Lily down and handing her a small glass of fresh apple juice before walking toward the seating area.
"The morning papers and digital feeds are entirely dominated by the takeover, ma'am," Thomas reported, his voice crisp and professional. "Social media is currently trending with #VanceVengeance. The video from the ballroom has reached over ten million views. Public sentiment is heavily on your side; Eleanor's past bullying behavior toward other vendors and debutantes has come to light, destroying any sympathy she hoped to muster."
Victoria took a slow sip of her tea, her eyes fixed on the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline. "And Arthur Sterling?"
"He checked out of his suite at the Plaza this morning and departed for his estate in the Hamptons," Thomas replied, swiping the tablet screen. "His legal team tried to file an emergency injunction against the acquisition early this morning, but our corporate attorneys blocked it before it even reached a judge. The asset transfer is 100% airtight."
"Good," Victoria said flatly. "And Richard? The groom?"
Thomas offered a faint, sardonic smile. "As soon as the acquisition news hit the stock tickers this morning, Richard’s personal accounts were flagged under our standard corporate audit. It turns out he had been quietly embezzling funds from Sterling Enterprises to finance his lavish lifestyle and his upcoming wedding. The moment he realized the company—and the fortune—belonged to you, he packed his bags and abandoned Eleanor at the hotel."
Victoria let out a low, cold laugh. "Loyalty bought with greed is worthless. Eleanor hitched her wagon to a parasite, and now she gets to watch him flee the sinking ship. It is poetic justice."
"There is one more thing, ma’am," Thomas added, his expression turning slightly cautious. "Eleanor has been calling our corporate line repeatedly, demanding to speak directly with you. She claims she wants to 'apologize face-to-face.'"
Victoria’s gaze hardened into glacial steel. She set her teacup down with a sharp clink. "Tell her that apologies belong in confessionals, not corporate boardrooms. She made her choice when she decided to terrorize a child. If she calls again, route her number straight to our legal department."
"Understood, ma'am." Thomas nodded briskly, turning on his heel and heading back toward the private elevator.
Later that afternoon, the heavy mahogany doors of the newly christened Vance Global executive boardroom swung open. Victoria sat at the head of the massive table, flanked by her core team of directors, vice presidents, and senior financial analysts. The room was a sea of expensive suits and tense anticipation. These were Arthur Sterling’s former top executives—men and women who had spent years enabling his ruthless, cutthroat corporate culture. Now, they were staring at the woman who had conquered them overnight.
"Good afternoon," Victoria’s voice cut cleanly through the murmur of the room, demanding absolute silence. She didn't use a microphone, yet every person at the long table sat up straighter.
"I have reviewed the structural audits of Sterling Enterprises—now operating as the Sterling Division of Vance Global," Victoria began, folding her hands neatly on the polished wood. "For decades, this company operated under a philosophy of intimidation, predatory acquisitions, and ethical bankruptcy. That era ends today."
A middle-aged executive near the center cleared his throat nervously. "Pardon me, Ms. Vance, but aggressive expansion has always been our primary revenue driver. If we soften our approach—"
"I did not say we were becoming soft, Mr. Harrison," Victoria interrupted smoothly, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying clarity. "There is a vast difference between being aggressive in the market and being a bully in society. Under Vance Global, we will dominate our industries through innovation, uncompromised quality, and absolute integrity. Anyone who confuses strength with cruelty will find themselves shown the same exit Arthur Sterling received."

Silence blanketed the boardroom. No one dared to object. The lesson of the wedding gown was still too fresh in everyone's mind; Victoria Vance did not make idle threats.
"Now," Victoria continued, opening the dossier in front of her. "Let us review the restructuring plan for the community outreach division. We are going to build something meaningful out of the ashes of the old regime."
