Chapter 4: The Digital Siege

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur of calculated, high-stakes maneuvers. Elena rented a modest apartment under an alias, knowing that Victoria’s reach was long and her resources seemingly infinite. She didn't use the family accounts; she used a small, emergency fund she had been siphoning away, cent by cent, for years—the "just in case" money she had never truly believed she would need.

She sat at a small kitchen table, the blue light of her laptop illuminating her face. She wasn't looking for a lawyer; she was looking for a whistleblower. She had found a young, hungry investigative journalist whose work had been consistently buried by the Sterling-owned media conglomerates.

"I have the whole story," Elena wrote in the encrypted email. "From the land grabs in the valley to the offshore accounts in the Caymans. I want it on the front page, but only if you can guarantee it won't be censored."

While she waited for the reply, her phone buzzed—a call from her husband, Marcus. Her heart tightened, but she let it go to voicemail.

“Elena, where are you? Mother is out of her mind. She’s calling the police, claiming you’ve kidnapped our child. Come home, we can fix this. You don’t know what she’ll do if you keep pushing her.”

Elena listened, a bitter smile touching her lips. Fix this? There was nothing left to fix. The foundation was already shattered; she was just clearing away the debris. She deleted the voicemail and began the upload. Every file, every scan, every timestamp moved into the public domain. It was a digital siege, and she was the architect.
