Chapter 5: The Price of Truth

The fallout was instantaneous. By the time the sun rose on the third day, the Sterling name was synonymous with scandal. News crews swarmed the estate, the stock price of Sterling Enterprises plummeted into freefall, and the local authorities—long kept in the dark by bribes—were forced to acknowledge the mountain of evidence sitting on their desks.

Elena watched it all on the news, sitting in a quiet diner on the outskirts of the city. The drama wasn't just on the screen; it was in the air. People were finally talking, finally questioning the power that had held them captive for so long.

Suddenly, the diner door swung open. It was Marcus. He looked disheveled, the sharp edges of his tailored suit softened by genuine terror. He spotted her and hurried over, his face pale.

"You've destroyed us, Elena," he hissed, sliding into the booth. "My mother... she’s being taken in for questioning. She’s threatening to cut me off, to blame me for everything. She’s going to use me as her shield."

Elena looked at him, not with malice, but with a crushing sense of pity. "She’s not using you, Marcus. You’ve been using each other for years. You were happy to reap the benefits of her cruelty until it stopped serving you. This isn't my doing—this is the weight of all those years finally pulling the house down."

"I can’t lose everything," he pleaded, his voice breaking.

"Then start being honest," she replied, standing up and grabbing her daughter’s hand. "Tell them what you saw. Tell them what you know. It’s the only way you’ll ever be free."

As she walked out of the diner, she didn't look back. She knew the path ahead would be grueling—the custody battles, the character assassination attempts, the legal fees—but for the first time, she was the one walking it.
