Chapter 11: Fire in the Dark

The judge ruled immediately in our favor, voiding the fraudulent mortgage and ordering a state federal investigation into Victor Vance for forgery and corporate fraud.

The victory was overwhelming, but Victor Vance was not a man who accepted defeat gracefully. Desperation drives dangerous men to monstrous acts.

Three nights after the court ruling, a heavy autumn thunderstorm swept over the city. Thunder rumbled across the sky, and torrential rain poured down on Langford Manor.

Inside the Manor, twenty orphaned children were fast asleep in the newly renovated east wing dormitory. I was in my living quarters finishing up paperwork when the power suddenly cut out, plunging the entire estate into pitch darkness.

Outside, a dark figure sneaked through the rear gardens toward the foundation’s main power substation. It was one of Victor’s disgruntled former security guards, paid off handsomely to commit an act of sabotage that would force the city to declare the Manor unsafe and condemned.

The sabotaged electrical junction box sparked violently. High-voltage wires short-circuited, sending white-hot sparks into the adjacent wooden storage shed where dry building materials were stored.

Within minutes, thick black smoke began billowing into the night sky, and flames licked up the outer wall of the east wing.

At that very moment, Helen was sitting on a bus stop bench across the street. Ever since the trial, she had taken to walking by the Manor at night from afar, finding a strange sense of quiet peace in seeing the bright lights and happy life occupying the place she had once kept so cold and dead.

When Helen saw the thick smoke pouring from the roof, her eyes widened in horror.

"The children!" she gasped.

Without hesitating for a single second, Helen ran across the rain-slicked street, threw open the front gates, and charged directly toward the burning building.

Inside, the fire alarm finally screeched to life. Panic broke out as staff members began guiding frightened children out into the main courtyard through the front exits.

"Is everyone out?" I screamed over the roar of the fire and rain, holding Emily tightly in my arms as fire trucks blared their sirens in the distance.

"The nursery in the east wing!" a caregiver yelled frantically, wiping soot from her face. "Little Tommy—he hid under his bed when he got scared! The door is blocked by fallen debris!"

I made a move to rush back inside, but a fallen burning beam blocked the main east corridor.

Suddenly, a figure drenched in rain swept past us. It was Helen.

"Stay back!" Helen shouted at me. "I know the secret service passageways in this house better than anyone!"
